Arena/Arina vs. Irina vs. Athena

We are expecting our first baby - a little girl. My husband is completely stuck on naming her Arena. He says if people can name their kids Marina and Diamond, why can’t he name his after something that matters to him (he’s an athlete.) He’d even be willing to spelling it Arina if that would get me to agree. I think it’s dumb. I’ve suggested Irina but he said that makes him think of a Russian gymnast, and he didn’t really say much about Athena so I might be able to talk him into that. Opinions on these names and suggestions for others that have a similar sound or sporty meaning would be most welcome. Thanks - Bethany

I like Arina! It’s another Russian spelling of Irina. Arena and Athena are not great IMO. What do you think of Anika or Karina/Carina?

I love Athena! So gorgeous.
I understand what he means about Irina, very Russian gymnast-y.
I can’t stand Arena. Or Arina. It totally sounds like you’re talking about a sports Arena. Imagine when that poor kid is an adult, trying to be professional, with the name Arena.
I definitely think you should go with Athena!!
