Can Teddy be a girls name? Do you like it? vs. Yes vs. No
I was babysitting my best friends daughter who is 1 named Sierra and I put Disney Channel on. Well in case you didn’t know there is a show called Good Luck Charlie, and there is a GIRL named Teddy on there, and I love it! Conveniently, I am having a girl and the name wasn’t chosen yet, and I want to name her Teddy. I don’t like Theodora nn Teddy, just Teddy. Can I do that? Is it a good idea? Sorry this was so long! Thanks! ~ Emily

Well, yes, it can -- but, it’s silly, imo. What about THEODOSIA instead?

Teddie \t(ed)-

You can nickname her anything you want, it doesn’t have to come from her name.
My two daughters are nicknamed Cricket and Bear. Their names are Caroline an Isabelle. If you need it to correlate somehow, try something like Claire. ClaireBear -> Teddy Bear -> Teddy.

Think about her running a fortune 500 company, do you think "Teddy" will strike fear into WallStreet or will "Theodosia" she’s got to be grown up some day and Teddy wont take her there

Absolutely not! Adorable? Cute? What about when she is a grown woman who wants a career? How many 50 year old are adorable? She is going to grow up and needs a name to grow with her, she would look ridiculous otherwise and certainly be held back in life by this name.

And in 40 years, how many fifty-year-olds will be named Nevaeh and Aidan? Times, and name trends, change.
That said, poll poster, I do think that Teddy would be best suited as a nickname. Thea Emmeline would be absolutely gorgeous. GL!

I’ll still comment though this thread is outdated. Teddy is a beautiful name. To those of you who think it will affect a womans career, I have a friend named Teddy and she has no problem gaining respect. It lies in what you teach her, not what you name her. Teddy cant go wrong.

I named my daughter Teddi. She LOVES it and she is 15 now. I erased Theodora from her birth cert. because I didn’t like it and I knew we’d never call her that. Good luck!! It’s a great name and means "gift from God" which all children are:)

I am a woman named Teddy. I was born in 1939 and named for the Teddy character in the long running popular radio show "One Man’s Family". It was expected that I would go by my middle name when I started school. I have never made the change. I like my name. Part of what I like about it is that it is rare. I have only run across one other woman named Teddy in all my 75 years. A handful of others whose names were pen names or stage names. I was named by my 10 year old brother because I was born on his Birthday. He got me instead of the tent he had hoped for. He said; "This is better than a tent". In those days, people did not speak of coming events and my brother and sister did not know there would be a baby until they got home from Sunday School that Oct 1 in 1939 and there I was. My sister chose my middle name, for her 3rd grade teacher.

I am amused by some of these comments which I will address from my experience with my name of Teddy for 75 years now. I was an early professional woman in a field of men. I was very promotable and my name was an asset, partly because it was a strong name and memorable. Being called Teddy as a nickname has not hurt the likes of Prince Charles or Ted Kennedy. Or Teddy Roosevelt. I was competitive with women and men socially, my name was an asset. The alternates suggested by some of these comments are gross. I was told as a child when other little children kidded me and called me Teddy Bear, that people only kid people they like. If they don’t like someone, they don’t kid them. After grade 2, no one ever poked fun at my name. It does go well with my middle and last maiden name and also married name. Harmony among the names is important. I suggest you prospective mothers leave the Teddy name alone. We Teddys out here, rare though we be, do not want our name varied, or made common or popular.

I love the name Teddy for a girl. I’ve always wanted to name my future baby girl, Teddy.
Theodore, Thea for short, sounds classy and dainty but Teddy is just more modern and powerful. I don’t see it as juvenile, at all.
Good luck!

Joining this thread late but we’ve decided on Teddie Grace for our baby girls name. My husband is German and I’m half English half Filipino and we wanted an international name that’s unique and strong. Love reading all these comments. Gift from God for sure as we’ve had quite a journey to get here. X

I love the name Teddy as a boy OR girl’s name!
Teddy means god’s gift, which all children are.
However, if you watch the Good Luck Charlie Sun Show Part 1, it reveals that Teddy’s parents were expecting a boy and were going to name her Teddy.
But still, LOVE IT!!

We named our daughter Teddie Holiday, for first and middle names. She's adorable and already seems to have the unique and ideal personality for such a name. My mother's nickname was Teddy and her father's name was Theodore, but he went by Ted. The whole family loves that we have a brand new Teddie in the family to carry on the family tradition of that name. It is a very special name, and with it, I believe comes personality and character. We simply love this name, and it is God's gift.

My Grandad was called Teddy and I have wanted a little boy to carry on his name since he passed away when I was 12. I am 21 weeks pregnant with a little girl and there is only 1 name we want to call her - Teddie. I think it is a beautiful name for a girl and I cant wait to introduce my family to the new Teddie in October.I don't think that people should have such strong opinions on other peoples choices. Name your child wahetevr you want to and embrace differences!

I have a Teddie girl too and we love it. She certainly is 'Gods gift'.
I don't think a name will hold anyone back professionally as some people stated and it certainly won't hold my girl back.
We will raise her with the confidence she needs to navigate this world.
