Tell him the child is both of yours.. you hate that name and then start with suggestions of other oler names.. and also remind him that dorcas will be shortened to DORK by almost every school child at some time and your daughter will have to go thru that pain.

Try to get him to look at other old names. maybe even do a poll here for suggestions.

Remind him that your daughter will be teased incessantly in school. He’ll get it.

make a game out of it, get 2 book, and two sheets of paper, both write down the names you like , then at the end get the list and star the ones that are the same. the matches make the final list!

and if all fail print out this pool and show him the negative comments and that name.

Tell your hubby that you absolutely can’t stand the name Dorcas. And I like the previous suggestion of making two lists from a name book or website and seeing if any of them match. Maybe make sure that you each have to pick at least 5 or 10 names... good luck!

Thanks for the ideas. I’ll try the lists thing.

Have him go by the name Dorcas for a day and see what kind of response he gets...it would be an anthropology experiment for him. Put himself in the place of his future son. I’m sure within a few minutes of meeting people with the name Dorcas he would change his mind about that stupid name.

My husband and I agreed from the beginning that we wouldn’t use a single name that either of us hated. We’ve both had to throw out names we were pretty attached to, but in the end, we managed to come up with 6 full names that we both love (just to cover all our bases! Unless we have more than 6 kids, we’re good to go now!). Now we are expecting our first, and the name is already taken care of--we just need to find out if it’s a boy or a girl!

I know it’s a bit sad for both of you to think of having to give up names you’re really attached to, but in the end, I think you’ll both be much happier (especially if it means you DON’T have to have a daughter named Dorcas!!) In any case, it’s worked for my husband and me, and we love the names we’ve picked out--even more so, because we picked them together!
