Billy? vs. Use it vs. Don’t
We got news that were having a boy and my husband is stuck on naming him Billy as his best friend growing up was named Bill and he died when he was 17. I don’t think Billy is a bad name but I just feel like it is a bit old and forgotten in this new generation. What do you think?

I think Billy is a great name or nickname, definitely timeless and classic. If you aren’t comfortable with it, then try to compromise. Middle name, maybe? Something similar? Same meaning?

Well, it does have a dated feel, and could have a bit of hick-ish feel to it. On the other hand, it is cute and has history and tradition to it (have him read Where the Red Fern Grows-- can’t argue with classic literature, that’s forever!) I married a Jim, and at first I thought it was the same--dated and a little hick-ish, but I really like it now.
Would you be against naming him William and calling him Billy?

I personally love Billy. Maybe give him a spunky popular middle name that way it doesn\’t sound so old to you. Or his middle name could start with a J and get the nick name BJ?
Billy Jared
Billy Ryan
Billy Masob
Billy Jacob
Or use Billy as the middle name?

We aren\’t liking William. Hubby agrees with comments and we are thinking of perhaps using it as a middle name but I think it would be nice to find another way to incorporate it into the first name.

I prefer Will but don’t like William or Billy, no offense intended. Maybe just use Bill as a middle name. Since its usually a nickname, using it as a complete middle name is quite quirky. In my family we all have really outdated, long and obscure middle names like Augustine and Euphegenia.

I love Billy and it is definitely not old. My little brother’s name is Billy Ray and he just turned 11 on Easter. And was little boy in my little sister’s first grade class named Billy too, and she is 9. I think Billy is a great name.

My uncles name is Mark William and I’ve only ever known him as Billy. I only found out that was his full name cause oh my mums birth certificate when we got our passports done. So you can have middle name William and call him Billy?

Hmmm... Belmont, Bellamy, Campbell, or Abel perhaps. Then nn him Billy...I think Bill would be ok, nn Billy, but I do prefer William. I see from the comments that you are not a fan of William, however. These are the best I can come up with at the moment.

My great uncle, dad, and little brother are named Billy. I think Billy is a great, classic, strong name just as Bill. (we often call my dad and brother Bill) Bill or Billy would both be great for your son and both would honor you husband’s friend nicely. For middle names I like
Billy Ray (though may be a little to country for you liking)
Billy Cole
Billy Joel
Billy Clay
Billy Joe
Billy Wayne
Billy Jay
Billy Jake
Billy River
Billy Jude
Bill Clayton
Bill Damien
Billy/Bill Allen
Billy/Bill Oliver
Billy/Bill David
Billy/Bill Samuel
Billy/Bill Calvin
Billy/Bill Austin

Billy/Bill Tyler
Billy/Bill Alex
Billy/Bill James
Billy/Bill Thomas
Billy/Bill Jason
Billy/Bill Weston
Billy/Bill Holden
Billy/Bill Landon
Billy/Bill Easton
Billy/Bill Grant
Like any? Hope this was helpful. :)

Use it in the middle spot, as Billy/Bill/Liam/William/Willem or whatever. Nice way of honouring your husband’s friend, while still allowing your son to have his own identity, and freeing you guys up for the excitement of name searching!

Billy is a great name and you should definitely use it. I am not a fan of William or Bellamy (definitely a girl’s name) or Belmont. I LOVE Billy though. It is a classic strong name. Though if you are worried about it being too much of a nickname-y sort use Bill and call him Billy. I know a Billy Jack that goes by Billy Jack, Bill, Billy, and BJ.
