Amaya? vs. Amya?

Looking for a way for our daughter’s name to be pronounced uh-my-ya. Found Amaya in a list of Japanese names (means "night rain"), but it’s pronounced uh-may-ya. :-( Do you think people in America would pronounce it that way, or do you think we could get them to pronounce it uh-my-ya? Should we spell it Amya instead? What are your thoughts? -Hannah

I see Amaya and think uh-my-ya. I’m from the states by the way.

I’m confused. Are you wanting to pronounce it differently from the way it’s meant to be pronounced? If so, I ’m not sure why you’d want to do that. That changes the meaning and everything else about the name completely. Or did I misinterpret something?

I see Uh-my-ah in Amaya as well. Maya is My-ah in the states, so I don’t think you’ll have problems. People may call her A-may-ah, but it’s an easy fix. Good luck!

I’m American and I went to school with a girl whose last name was Amaya. But she was El Salvadorian not Japanese, that’s how she pronounced it though.

Sorry for confusion. We would like a name that is pronounced uh-my-ya. We though that since the slightly common name Maya is pronounced My-ya, then perhaps Amaya would be pronounced uh-my-ya. We looked it up, but found that it is not pronounced the way we thought it’d be pronounced. So, we are debating about using the name anyway but keeping our preferred pronunciation or trying to find a name that is actually pronounced the way we like it.

More clear?

Thank you for mentioning your El Salvadorian friend. Maybe that is the Spanish pronunciation for the name (maybe it’s also a Spanish name).

You could also spell Amiah which may help it not be pronounce uh-may-ya

That’s a thought. Thanks.

Ok, I get it now. Maia is another spelling of the name that is pronounced My-ya. So, maybe Amaia or Amaiah? It does sound pretty, by the way...

OK, good. I do think that will get you the pronunciation you want. Maia is my favorite spelling of that name. So, I’m liking Amaia, too..
