Magaidh vs. Maggie vs. both pronounced MAG ee
Hello. My husband is Scottish and since this will make our baby girl half Scottish I wanted her name to have something Scottish about it. We both like the name Maggie but I think it would be a good idea to use the Gaelic spelling. But do you think it would work in practice? I think it makes the name more unique.
The Top Baby Name is...
Magaidh
Maggie
both pronounced MAG ee

In theory I love it. But in practice, no one will ever say the poor child’s name correctly. Or spell it. Unless you intend to move to Scotland.

I can’t say we would NEVER move to Scotland but it does seem unlikely at this moment in time. Thank you for being honest.

Personally, I like Gaelic spellings, even though I’m not Scottish. I don’t know how to pronounce them at first, but once I learn, I always seem to feel more appreciation for the name. As if I unlocked some secret of its heritage...If that makes any sense at all. Basically, I love Magaidh, and if you can handle explaining the pronunciation and spelling to those who meet your baby for the first time, then you should use it. Just be prepared, because that scenario will most likely happen throughout her life. It is a beautiful name, though, I love it. :-)

I feel like Maggie is a nickname. Magaidh looks more complete, although complicated to spell!
