Pronunciation of Xavier vs. zay-vee-er ? vs. ex-ay-vee-er ?

I’m looking for a boys name to go with my sis name, Austin Michael, and my current favorite is Xavier, however, I’m confused as to the correct/most common pronunciation. I assumed it was the first, but several family members thought the second. What do you think?

I don’t like Xavier (I say it the first way) with Austin. The names don’t seem to go very well together.

It is both. Xavier can be pronounced either Zay-vee-er or Ex-ay-vee-er but it is more common for Ex-ay-vee-er. If you want Zay-vee-er the more common spelling is Zavier. With the X spelling you actually say X-ay-vee-er. both are very nice names.

I love it and I usually hear it pronounced with the ’Z’ sound even though it begins with ’X’
Sometimes it is silent too like an ’H’ sound

Sounds as though it begins with H too in Spain

Never even thought about spelling it with a Z, thanks so much!

Have heard it pronounced with a H before actually, but I always assumed that was Javier?

Thanks for your opinions!

Xavier can be pronounced 3 different says.
Zay-vee-er
Ex-ay-vee-er
Hah-vee-air
I personally prefer Hah-vee-air which can also be spelled Javier. If you really want the Zay-vee-er pronunciation I suggest the spelling Zavier.

It’s properly pronounced the first way but lots of people mistakenly pronounce it the second way. I would not dumb down the name, however, by spelling it with a Z.

Many different countries say Xavier in different ways. In spanish speaking countries x and j both make the h sound. In France it is originally pronounced sav-yay americanized to ex-zay-ver then dumbed down to zavier (zay-vee-er)
