Madeline vs. Madison

My sister in law’s name is Madison, and my best friend’s name is Madeline. One of them will be the god mother of one twin, the other will be the godmother of the other twin. I wanted to name my twin girls after their godmothers, but both my sister in law, Madison, and my best friend, Madeline are called Maddie, and we fear this will happen to our girls if we give them the names Madison and Madeline. We were thinking of calling Madison by Madison and Madeline by Maddie. What do you think?

Not a good idea, I would use one as a fn and one as a mn

I think they are too close. Maybe Madeline and Addison, or just name her Madison and call her Addie.

I would use them as middle names. Then you can honour your friend and sister in law, plus choose the names you love for your girls.

that would be so confusing!!! Try them as middle names

Definitely better as middle names.
I’m Cecilia Caitlin, after my godmother, but always have gone by Cait. I’ve ALWAYS wished my parents had switched around the names so I wouldn’t have had to say, "Yeah, Cecilia’s my name, but I prefer Cait" - it gets REALLY old REALLY fast.

defenitely middle names, NOT first names

They are much better suited as middle names. I am so glad that I wasn’t named after my godmother because I don’t even see her any more...............

Pick names you love and then go for Madison and Madeline. They’re too close for twins or siblings as first names.

Well, we’ve always loved the name Madeline as a first name, do you think my sister in law would be jealous if we gave one the fn of Madeline and the other one the mn of Madison?

Use them both as middle names. I love Madeline and Madison.

Yes, I think your sister-in-law would be jealous if you named the one twin after her godmother, and not the other. Use them as middle names and bypass the whole potential can of worms.

I think that they’d understand that the two are too close for first names. However, to avoid having your best friend and daughter being named the exact same thing, I would just stick to having them both as middle names. I don’t think jealousy will be an issue, though. I think that giving the girls two of their very own first names and then having the middle names both honor someone and be close, gives them that "twin" name connection that many parents feel is necessary.

What are other names you like or have been thinking about or just types of names?

Like I said we hadn’t really explored options of names, these are just some of the top of my head, but if anyone has any suggestions for fn. Were still not decided yet on to use them as fn or mn’s.

I like the idea of best friend and sister-in-law’s middle names or maiden names, or something...or keep Madeleine and use your sister-in-law’s middle name.

Leah Madison and Becca Madeline
