Variant forms are not nicknames.

I would just use Sadie, but otherwise Sarah is a great choice. Sadie is a nickname for Sarah... Back many years ago, there was very little variation in names for females and so families invented creative nicknames for their daughters... Many of those are now mainstream names. Sadie and Sally were both originally nicknames for Sarah.

Using a variant form that was originally a nickname as a nickname today is like throwing a little history into your child’s life. Why not?

SADIE---unlike the above novels, I would just say that a nickname is either a SHORTER version of the name, or a name that just DEVELOPS over time due to the personality or physical characteristics ("Shorty", "Red", "Bubba", etc.). Sadie is NOT a shorter version of Sarah!!

I am not looking for a shorter version of Sarah. Rather, for a name that gives Sadie as a nickname. I am surprised over all the controversy. Sadie is, in my understanding, a well accepted and long standing nickname for Sarah.

Personally I love the idea of Mercedes as a formal name and Sadie as a nm. Mercedes has a beautiful meaning and history that dates back long before the car company. Sarah is nice though I’m not sure people today associate Sadie as a nn for it...as seen by the controversy here. Enjoy your little Sadie!

I personally don’t see Sadie as a nn for Sarah, history or not. They are both names in my opinion and not interchangeable. So sorry for you having to go thru all of that hard work and getting all worked up trying to prove me wrong. It still doesn’t change my opinion. I love the name Sadie all by itself and don’t think it needs to be a shortened version of a longer name. It’s perfect as is.

And I’m sorry as well for all of the controversy and novels that sparked out of my one comment.

If you want a full name for Sadie, definitely go for Sarah. I’m also surprised at all the controversy... People saying that Sadie can’t possibly be a nickname for Sarah are being just plain ignorant. It very much is.

Sarah-Sadie, Sally
Sadie most likely came about as a nickname for Sarah based on the medieval English attempt to pronounce the Norman trilled "r". (See Richard-Dick) The "r" came off as a "d" sound in English. Sally probably came about due to similar circumstances. Some Germanic languages may have attempted the trilled "r" and it came off as an "l" sound.

Can’t everyone just agree that Sadie originated as a nickname for Sarah, but has now also become a name in its own right? Many names started like that. This way, everyone is right. Some will prefer to use it as a nickname, some will prefer it as an independent name, but in the end, no one is wrong; they just have differing tastes!
Personally, I think Sadie can go either way. I adore it as a nickname for Sarah, or as a name on its own. I also think Mercedes is very pretty, and I think it’s very creative to use Sadie as a nickname for it. You can’t go wrong, whatever you use! I think I’ll personally go for Sarah as the full name, with Sadie as the nickname. :-)
