Dahlia Donna vs. Tolerable vs. Terrible

Hello! My husband and I are in love with the name Dahlia for our daughter but we’re a bit concerned about it with the middle name Donna. Do you think that Dahlia Donna is not bad/"tolerable" or is it just down right terrible? Donna has a huge meaning to us, so we know that is not an option to change. Thanks for the opinions!

If Donna means so much , middle name isn’t much of an honor. It’s more like a token sentiment. Poorly executed, better left undone. Dahlia Lane.

Its pretty terrible to be honest. Since Donna has a big meaning to you how about you change the first name instead?

Use Donna as first name.

You do not need to be rude. We have already stated that Donna is NOT an option to change so don’t be disrespectful. We have reasons for only using it as a middle name which you do not need to know.

Madonna, Ladonna, Bella Donna, or the middle eastern spelling "Dana" pronounced Donna.

Donna is not an option as a first name which is why we have chosen it as a middle name.

Donna is staying exactly as it is and it is staying as a middle name. Madonna, Ladonna, etc. are not an option.

Dahlia Dawn would be better. Its still kinda like Donna. GL.

It’s not terrible, really. Not the greatest flow, but not awful. If it means a lot to you and you don’t want it as a first name, it’s fine as a middle name. I don’t suppose she’ll be going by both names?
You could try similar names for first and middle.
Delia
Aliyah
Aria
Ayla
Aya
Dawn
Daisy
Alice
Allison
Jillian
Lorelai
Dahna - italian version of Donna
Dana
Oona

I think Bella Donna sounds nice :)

I would suggest changing the first name - although in all honesty middle names are negligible. Hardly ever used in the ’real-world’ and are only used for distinction purposes. So if you -love- Dahlia then her middle name could be Donna - as even some people don’t even have middle names. Here’s a few suggestions instead of Dahlia if the flow of the names really does bother you:
Verity
Felicity
Sienna
Acacia
Annika
Linnea
Cassia
Fiona
Adriana

Then WHY did you post a poll asking us...keep it and your daughter can CHANGE it later!!!
posted by guest :: 11 years ago | report
Donna is not changing at all, please stop telling us to change it or suggest a different middle name; it’s very rude and disrespectful.

We would not be using Dahlia Donna as a double name; she would just be going by Dahlia. We like Alice from the suggestions!

Bella is our dog’s name so that wouldn’t really be the best idea for us!

I think you came here to argue. Honestly, anyone can see that its awful. You didn’t need strangers opinions to know that. If Donna is dead set for the middle name, then just find a new first name. Its not that hard. Don’t get all bent out of shape cause you asked for opinions and you got them. Its not our fault you can’t handle the truth.

We like Felicity!

We asked if the name sounded fine and stated that changing Donna is not an option; not for you to disregard the last part. We never said Dahlia was set in stone; so why not give other first name suggestions that you think would sound better? It would be a lot more helpful!

We didn’t come to argue; and we didn’t ask for opinions on if we should change Donna. We had said it was set as a middle name. Once we had gotten a vote, and if the outcome came to be that it was that bad, we were going to ask for other first names. Don’t go around assuming why we made a poll.

WOW!!! Use whatever name you want, get some psych meds, and have a nice life!!!

I apologize for the suggestions for Donna, I hadn’t seen it was set in stone.
Everyone is being very rude about this issue, there’s no need to. If you don’t have anything constructive to say, then keep quiet.
Personally I think the name is just fine, there’s nothing that terrible with it, honestly... If you love Dahlia and nothing else, keep it. Donna means a lot to you? Keep it.
Would you consider a second middle name, then? Something like Dahlia Katherine Donna, for example, to break the sound of Dahlia Donna.

Whoever the poster that wrote ’WOW!!’ etc. Is very rude. I’m glad you liked my suggestion of Felicity - and I hope you find the perfect name for your daughter. Best of luck to you again!

Thank you to the last two posters! We had been considering two middle names, and we would likely use another family name if we did so. We would probably use Audrey, Michelle, Elizabeth, or Rosalind if we were to use a second middle name

Here are a few other suggestions for you (I’m the one that had suggested Felicity - again):
Amalia
Clarissa
Ada
Lucy
Flora
Adelaide
Cordelia
Elizabeth
Genevieve
Amelia
Audrey

Dahlia Elizabeth Donna and Dahlia Michelle Donna sound lovely. GL

We love Ada, Lucy, and Adelaide! Elizabeth and Audrey would only be middle name options for us since they are family names

I like Dahlia Elizabeth Donna - if you go the double middle name route (suggester of Felicity again). I’m glad you liked a few of those - and I had posted before reading your comment about family names - so sorry I accidentally suggested them as firsts. Again, GL!

Dahlia Elizabeth Donna is very nice! When considering middle names, especially with multiple ones, you have to remember there’s a surname afterwards. Some combos don’t really sound complete and not the best, so people discard them, but if you add the surname at the end, it’s perfect. Does that make sense?
Michelle doesn’t quite flow, Audrey would be best not to use because of the D. Dahlia Rosalid Donna might have the problem of Ds running into each other, but it’s another nice option.
Best of luck!

I think the issue is that they both end in a with a, and have the same number of syllables. I would either choose another first name or do a double middle name
Dahlia Evelyn Donna
Laurel Donna
Lauren Donna
Madelyn Donna
Katelyn Donna
Phoebe Donna
Courtney Donna

Well I think you got your answer. It’s kinda bad together with Dahlia. You may have to find a new first name.

No one is being " disrespectful"
Opinions are opinions. Don’t ask for them if you’re too thin skinned to hear one other than your own. Dahlia Donna is terrible. Sorry!
