I would keep it as a verbal nickname. Chances are, whenever she writes her name down anywhere it’ll just be "Ruby" anyway, because it’s so short.

Honestly, if I heard you say "Roobs" I would assume you’re calling someone named Ruby. But now that I see it written down, my mind starts to think of other things that look similar. Maybe it’s something you can call her, but not something you have to write down. I don’t know many people who actually write down their nicknames anyway.

I’d rule Roobs right out. But Rubes is problematic, too. A rube is a slang term for a person from a rural region who lacks polish and sophistication. Basically, a hick. I guess verbally it’s not so bad, though...
