Please Help vs. !

Our little baby girl was born this afternoon at 3:02 pm weighing in at 5 lbs 7 oz! We have a tradition where we don’t tell the family the name until birth. Well when I told my mom we were naming her Elenora she told me it was the ugliest name she’s ever heard. This left me and my husband heart broken. We cannot choose a name that my mom doesn’t like. Please help us choose another name! Thanks so much!

Your mom doesn’t get a say in what you name your own child. Tell her that if she doesn’t like Elenora, than she can give her a special nickname that only she will call her.

Yeah, you can choose a name your mom hates. She didn’t have the kid, you did. Tell her to stick it where the sun don’t shine, and realize she got to name her kids, now you get to name yours. Don’t let her ruin the happiest moment of your life. Get a backbone. For real.

My mother likes Desiree. Thanks for the suggestions! The reason we don’t want to use a name my mother hates is because my daughter will be with her a lot.

Tell your mother that’s your daughter’s name and if she doesn’t like it that’s too bad for her. How dare she ruin the biggest day of your life.

I like the name Eleanora, but if I were y’all I would give her a nickname like Elle, Ellie, Ella, or Nora. Another option is to choose another name. I love the names Aoife (iron. Ee-fuh) or Lorelei. They are both kind of unique and beautiful. Congratulations on your baby girl :)

Elenora is beautiful.

I say name her what you want. It doesn’t matter if she’ll be with her a lot. She should love her whatever her name is.

How sad that your mom didn’t have the manners to keep her thoughts to herself. Elenora is a beautiful name! Stick with the name you and your husband chose - yours are the only two opinions that count. Hopefully in time the name will grow on your mom and she won’t be able to picture her grandchild as anything else. If not, her loss. Let’s hope she learns to keep her mouth shut. If you give in now, she’ll continue telling you how to raise your kids forever.

Tell her that she’s right and you’ve chosen Apple instead. Or Zappa. Or some other celebrity name that she would like less than Elenora.

Maybe she’ll see that your choice could be far worse.

It’s terrible that your mother has spent your lifetime mentally abusing you. You have made excuses for her, which is disgusting. It’s time to grow up. You’re a mother now! This is YOUR child. You and your husband make the decisions regarding your child, nobody else!

My mother was also quite vocal about the names my siblings and I chose for our children. She didn’t like a single one. I knew for sure that she would hate the name I had chosen for my #2 son: Forrest. So when I was pregnant I told her I had chosen Cornelia for a girl and Ebenezer for a boy. Toward the end of the pregnancy, she was relieved when we told her we had "changed our minds". :)
