Ok usually I’d say change it but you have to see you sister all time it’s not like you’re adopting a random child and will never or hardly ever see the birth parents. I personally don’t like the name and might say compromise in another way what if you did something like Sienna Novalee? that way you pick a name and she picks and name.

Leave her name Serendipity for legal purposes and for your sister and call her Seren. Seren Novalee is actually very cute!

I’d leave it. Your sister is giving up her daughter. If she wants the name to stay, it’s not that big of a deal imo. You can use the nickname Seren or Sera most of the time if you want.

Serendipity is horrid, dont sugar coat it. If anyone else came on here asking for thoughts on Serendipity (which they have in the past) it gets slandered and run through the dirt. No one here can deny that.
Seren Kismet is a nice compromise in a cute way. I can see your logic. The Seren from Serendipity and it means star and Kismet so it retains the original meaning. Go with that! GL

It’s technically not her baby anymore. She as the poster said signed off all parental rights. She didnt have to do that, she chose to. She wont be known as mommy she will be Aunty, therefore I dont see why you would feel guilty or confused about changing the name of YOUR baby, that you will take care of and call millions of times throughout the majority of the next 19 years. Name her what you want.
Personally I like Sienna Lyra but Seren Kismet/Novalee is a nice compromise. Go with your heart. Serendipity isnt attractive as a first name imo.

Seren is a nice compromise. I’m sure its upsetting for your sister but serendipity is a little much for that baby girl. For her that little girl can always be sweet serendipity.

What about Serena - its similar style to Serendipity but not awful and a name she can age with. Then leave Novalee or just use Nova or Lee as the mn. Serena Lee is quote pretty and incorporates both names.

Hmm very true poster #6 ! I agree with you now. I was thinking of the baby sister as still the mother. Seren Kismet is sweet in its meaning and connection. The new Aunty can have Seredipity as a special nickname for her only. If you dont mind me asking why did your sister give up parental rights when she sounds like she still wants to be the mom?

Seren Nova would be a better compromise perhaps?

Im glad you saw my subtle thought process behind the name Seren Kismet! Sienna Lyra also connects to Nova since Lyra is a constellation and I just love the sound of Sienna.
The middle name Lee is a very nice suggestion, I really like that. Serena isnt any of our styles though, thank you.
Its quite a really long story as to what lead to the adoption but it really comes down to my baby sister is only 14.

I would prefer to not use Nova itself as it is also the name of a little girl on the newest season of Teen Mom, its where my sister got it from.
I want to thank everyone, I feel loads better about changing her name now, I know it is what’s right. I as well have to stop thinking of her as my sister’s and not my own yet.
From the votes it seems Sienna Lyra wins. We can drop Lyra and possibly do Sienna Kismet or Sienna Lee.

I will go with Sienna Kismet since it still has meaning to the BM. I thought Nova lost its beauty as well after it was used on season 3. I still also like Sienna Lyra. I dont like Sienna Lee, sounds like it could be a food brand. It is such a shame about your sister, that is so young! Hopefully she will learn from this. I would encourage her to still call her Serendipity as a nickname.

My sister refuses at this point to discuss any names and I dont think she will call the baby anything but Serendipity anyway. Maybe and hopefully she will come around, I think the wound is still fresh is all. I understand completely it is hard for her. My sister was and always will be my first baby, and I love her more than anything. I just hope she doesnt grow to resent me. But the most important point of all this is for my new daughter to have the best so she can do better than all of us. Ive decided on Sienna officially but Im still unsure of which middle name.

She’s only 14 when she is older she will agree with your decision even if she won’t admit it. I’m not sure I even knew what serendipity meant when I was 14.

Our mother used to make us read the dictionary in our elementary school years. And Im pretty sure its one of her favorite movies, that one with Kate Beckinsale? I will post again for her middle name. Thank you to everyone.

Why not keep at least one of the names that your sister chose? Sienna Novalee or Sienna Serendipity.
