which unisex vs. names are ok vs. for girls?
Hubby and I are in love with unisex names! We would love to give one to our daughter.. but with all the new names that are being considered unisex and the boy names being given to girls.. were not sure which names are usable for girls.. we dont want names like Tyler, Ryan, Dylan, or Elliott, we prefer those for boys.. please give us some suggestions for unisex names that you feel are useable for girls.. thanks!

Honestly, I don’t believe any boys names to be "unisex". They all sound terrible on girls. BUT, names like Elliot or Noah are worse than Riley and Bailey, which are worse than Casey and Whitney, which are worse than names that really don’t have gender (ie. nature names) like Rain(e), Sky(e), Ember, etc.

My rule of thumb is, if I hear someone say "Hi, my name is ___ Smith" and I expect to meet a boy, then I wouldn’t use it. With some more popular names, like Taylor, I’d probably go "oh, that could be a girl too" but only after I think "that’s a boy". Maybe Kelly or Courtney?

These are really the only unisex names I like (ones that I like equally on boy or girl), at least that I can think of off the top of my head.
Drew
Morgan
Robin (though I have to admit, I kinda like it spelled Robyn for a girl)
Stacy
Ariel
Brook
Casey

You could go with a female form of a male name and give her the nickname.

Okay, I have to admit. I kinda like Bailey as a unisex name too. I once met a girl bearing the name, and it really fit her. Maybe it depends on the person bearing the name, I’m not sure. But I kinda like it.

I don’t think they ever really work well but female versions of some male names do. eg Vivienne is a female version of Vivian and yet stays feminine.

These went girl so long before the present trend that they’re not likely to be brought back on boys. The more recent ones are starting to see a revival on boys.

Yeah, Dell came from an English surname. I like it, though it occurs to me kids could begin chanting "The Farmer in the Dell" over and over...
Y’know, this could be a useful resource: http://www.behindthename.com/names/gender/unisex
