Emika vs. Mio

We are looking at Japanese names for our child. We do not know yet if we are having a daughter or a son, but as the boy scouts say "be prepared". Both of these names are traditionally female. We think both can be easy enough to use in a Western context, even if they are not typical English names.

The Top Baby Name is...

Mio I think might be viewed as masculine by American eyes. I think Emika is GORGEOUS, though.

Emilia for girl
Mio for boy or Milo

Naomi, Hana, and Erika are all Japanese names that are exactly like the English counterparts but from different roots. Any of them would work very well!

As stated above, we are looking for Japanese names. Emilia and Milo are not Japanese, and Mio in Japan is a female name. We are not looking for suggestions, but any feedback on these two names will be very much appreciated.

We are aware of those names. We do not like them in their English or Japanese presentations. Thank you.

I think Emika is nice, but in the English speaking world would be considered a "unique" smush spelling of Emma & Erika.

Mio would forever be misspelled as Milo.

If you do not live in Japan then you need to consider the reality that no one will be familiar with Japanese names and perhaps consider an English name.

Mio on a girl would get confused with Mia. The "o" ending is for boys, and the "a" ending is for girls.

Yes, we have considered the reality that no one will be familiar with the names. We are not looking for familiarity, just names that are easy to pronounce by native English speakers. Emika and Mio might indeed seem very "out there" but they can be pronounced and easily written in a Western alphabet. That is pretty much all we are looking for. Of course, some rare people might be able to appreciate a foreign name for what it is, but for the majority of people that might be too much to ask for, so we just want an easy name even if its unfamiliar.

I really like the name Emika. If you are only looking to see which people could pronounce you could go with either. Personally I really like Emika. Mio is nice too just not my preference.

Maybe it’s because I live in Seattle (large Japanese population), but I think these are both very nice, very pronounceable names. Because your last name is relatively long, I prefer the short/sweet Mio. I don’t think people will turn it into Milo. Good luck!

The world is becoming increasingly multicultural. People can and will figure out that there are no hard/fast rules for naming. I can immediately think of 4 boys’ names that end in A and 3 girls’ names that end in O.
