Mackenzie for a boy? vs. yes vs. no
As a disclaimer, my maiden name is Mackenzie. I am expecting my first child in a few weeks, a little boy, and am pretty set on using Mackenzie. However, at a family function with my in-laws they highly criticized our choice calling it a girls name. He would go by ’Mack’. Is it too feminine even with the nickname ’Mack’? The only reason we like Mackenzie is because of the meaning to me.

No! I completely agree with your family! It is a girl name only!

Please do not name your son Mackenzie. Just name him Mac. I think Mac would make a perfect boy name if you want to use something similar to Mackenzie. He will be teased to no end if you give him the name Mackenzie only because it is such a popular girls name and also because it is very feminine.

My brother’s friend’s name is Mackenzie and I don’t find it a big deal. Everyone just calls him Mack...

Its fine Mackenzie is not a girls name at all! It even means son of the fair one, not daughter.
With so many girls being given boys names nowadays there is a chance of him meeting a girl with whatever you choose.

How about Mackenzo? This way, he can always go by Enzo as well :)
The problem isn’t so much that he would have a mainly feminine name, but that he might develop a complex around that. I’d alter the name or stick to something more straightforward.

I love Mackenzie for a boy. I know a boy named Mackenzie and he was really handsome and funny. Mackenzie even means "son of Kenneth". Its only considered "feminine" because some person 30 years ago decided to use it for their daughter and it caught on.

I think it’s great on a boy and there’s a good meaning for the name.

I like it very much for boys, and even more so since it is your maiden name. I don’t find it particularly attractive for girls. But, to each their own. Tons of names are used by both girls and boys. As the mother of a teen ager, I can honestly say I have never heard of anyone of either gender being teased as a result.

I know it’s a boys name, but in this day and age it’s only a girls name, regardless of the meaning. I wouldn’t be so concerned about what the family thinks, but more of how he will be teased by classmates

I think Mack is fine for a boy, but I feel like when he’s older, Mackenzie will be the type of name he doesn’t want people finding out that’s what Mack is short for.
