Kendal/Kendall vs. Thoughts?
I’ve recently started loving the name Kendall for my son who’s due pretty soon. I know it’s unisex, so what gender do you think of for this name? Do you like this name? Any opinions on the name would be very helpful! Also which spelling do you prefer Kendal or Kendall? Thanks so much! -Mrs.S (I’d probably use the nick name Kenny)

I really like Kendall! I always thought it was too masculine for a girl’s name, so I can easily see it on a boy. It’s very handsome. However, if the "unisex" nature of the name truly bothers you, then perhaps you should consider the name Kenneth. But I do think Kendall is just fine! (Oh, and I prefer double L’s!)

Thanks so much! The unisex thing doesn’t bother me since I see Kendall as a boy name way more than a girl. -Mrs.S

I’ll warn you, it’s certainly risky. Names that are unisex get more and more feminine with time (Evelyn used to be a boy name). Already, only 39% of Kendall’s in the US are guys and that number will keep shrinking. Think of those men named Meredith or Kennedy! Their names are super girly, yet when they were born it was the same as Kendall is now.

Well that is true. I wish people would stop giving boys names to girls! I met a little girl yesterday named Carter! Thanks for your input- Mrs.S

I hate it when people give boys names to girls and call them "unisex", and then they’re totally hypocritical when they act like they can’t be used as boy names anymore. Unisex means usable for EITHER gender, blast it, stop trying to make these masculine names exclusively girl names. If you’re gonna do that, then have the decency to say so and stop talking about this "unisex" tripe, because that’s not what you’re trying to do at all. If it wire truly unisex, then it’d be fine for either gender, but it’s NOT. Now people are afraid to give their boys names like Kendall and Spencer and Emerson and Elliott because they’re "unisex", aka girls only now. It’s ridiculous!
...Errr, sorry for that rant. :x I quite like Kendall on a boy.

Kendall (this spelling) is awesome for a boy. I really don’t understand why people use it for a girl.
I don’t think it’s tremendously risky that Kendall will turn completely female. Names like Evelyn turned girl in a era where it was considered horrible for anything even remotely feminine to be associated with a male. If any more than a few girls where given a male name, the parents of boys dropped it like it was radioactive. As a culture we’ve moved past that for the most part. Now names like Emerson and Avery can be more popular for girls and yet still rise in popularity for boys. It’s awesome, imo.
So I don’t think that any of the boy names that get used for girls these days will completely go girl like some of those in the past have. In fact, I’ve seen a trend of using those sorts of names on boys lately. I like that and hope it continues.

I agree! Kendall has always been manly to me. It’s a strong, handsome name which makes me curious why parents find it attractive on girls. GL!

I’ve never liked this name, but I would automatically assume it was a girl name. I would spell it Kendal if it’s for a boy.
