Thoughts on vs. Selah pronounciation
hi am Jill. My husband and I are considering using the name Selah. But, our biggest concern is how to pronounce it. At first I thought it was see-laa but now I’ve heard it can also be pronounce SAY-la or Sella like Stella? So it’s confusing. I do like the sound of all of those but I’d like to know which one is the most commonly used. What’s your thoughts on the name. We are also considering the name Taya.

[C-la] Like Sela Ward. I actually like the spelling Sela better though.

Sela and Selah are actually two different Hebrew words that mean two different things. Sela can be pronounced Say-lah or See-lah where Selah is only pronounced see lah.

I’d think it would be pronounced Sell-uh.

The correct pronunciation is See-lah. I like the pronunciation Sell-ah best but I don’t agree with deliberately mispronouncing a name, so if you use it, I’d pronounce it as it is supposed to be pronounced.

I’ve always been told it’s See-lah.

Considering Selah as well. Did a little research, and SELL-uh is the original Hebrew pronunciation. Actress Sela (spelled without H) Ward pronounced SEE-luh, and the Christian band Selah pronounced SAY-luh. If we use this name, will likely go with SEE-luh.

Regarding previous post ... Selah prounced SEE-luh is what we will use by the way (Selah is biblical spelling).

I would say it as See-luh. I don’t like, because no one knows how to pronounce it or spell it, and that would annoy me. I also don’t think any of the pronunciations are all that great.

I have a little one year old named Selah. I was worried about the same thing, but I’m glad that we went with it because I love her name! We have gotten many compliments on it as well. The truth it, neither See-luh nor Say-luh is an accurate pronunciation. It is actually pronounced Seh-law in hebrew. We use the pronunciation Say-luh because we liked it better than See-luh...I found out the true pronunciation from my Israeli uncle afterwards, but I have no regrets. The spelling. Selah is a very biblical name (which is why we chose it). Sela is secular, and is most commonly pronounced See-luh. Good luck!

When I first heard it, it was pronounced Selah but I think I will go with Say-la if we use it! Thanks everyone!
