Gregg reminds me of eggs and the H.H. Gregg store. But hey, it’s just a nickname and a lot of NNs don’t make practical sense. If you want him to stand out, throw in the extra G -- artistic license!
P.S. My dad’s name is Gerald but goes by Jerry, not Gerry. Long story haha...
