Baby Name Poll Results
Go for it! vs. Not a chance.
My husband and I want to use the name Adam, if this baby is a boy. We both love the name as well as it’s biblical meaning. Seth (my husband’s name), is Adam’s son in the Bible. We like that it would be reverse in our family. Two problems: 1. Husband’s sister (29 yrs old) in newly into her first serious relationship with a guy named Adam. It is early, but I do see potential with him. 2. Father-in-law’s office manager/family friend has a 3 yr old grandson named Adam. These things don’t bother us, but will they upset the other people? Can we use Adam??

The sister’s boyfriend having the same name would be off putting to me and I wouldn’t use it.

The boyfriend is my biggest concern. They have only been dating three months (I have been pregnant longer), but I don’t know if it would be weird to have two Adams in the family IF they do get married. Thank you for your comment. Still so unsure !
Maybe you would like Aidan?

We really prefer more traditional names and also the biblical coincidence. Thank you for the suggestion though! Our second choice is Thomas, we just can’t seem to let go of Adam.
Adam is a wonderful name and I wouldn’t worry about it however if your looking for a uncommon biblical name I have a boy named Abel Thomas and never stopped loving his name.

I prefer Thomas to Adam anyway.

I responded to your earlier poll. In a nutshell, I think it’s OK to proceed - but with caution. Think through any potential awkward situations concerning your sister and her boyfriend. I still don’t think it would be a bad thing to discuss things with your sister.

My previous poll disappeared! Thank you for responding to both. This is kind of an unusual situation, so I appreciate all opinions. I agree that if they are still together close the my due date, I will need to broach the subject with her. We usually like surprises, but this one might be awkward.
I think the universe is trying to tell you something. Go with another name. Gideon is Bibilocal and awesome, or there are others.

I think it that it would be fine, but I agree, talk to his sister about it. Good luck!

Another consideration would be what if your sister and Adam do not go the distance? What if it ends badly, or just sadly, for her? Either before or after your son is born. Would that be awkward?

Maybe you could go with a "J" middle name so that if there becomes a problem with using Adam down the road, you can call him AJ. Adam James, Adam Jacob, and Adam Joshua all sounds nice.

If you use Adam without discussing it with your sister, you are basically telling her you have no confidence in her choice of relationship, and she might be very hurt or sensitive to this. You need to talk it over with her. I have the same problem, my sisters ex has the name that i favour but i dont want our son to be a constant reminder!!!

You might mention it to your sister-in-law and Adam, but not as if you’re asking permission. Say something along the lines of, "We really love your name, Adam, and it’s our number one choice for our baby. How do you feel about a little Adam running around?" (look at both of them as you say this.) My favorite middle name for Adam is Christopher, so a little guy named Adam Christopher could sometimes go by the nickname Ace. Good luck.
