Keālia (Kay-uh-Lee-uh) vs. Nohea (Noh-hay-uh)

My baby girl is due on the 19th (of this month!) and I’m second guessing her name. We decided to name her Keālia before we even knew the sex. We love the name, plus it has meaning to us (the first place we went on vacation together). We are only having second thoughts because so many names and places here start with K or have a lot of Ks in them. So many people I know have a name that starts with K or a nickname that starts with K. That’s why we like Nohea, the sound is more uncommon. Plus, her Hawaiian name starts K. Am I overthinking this? Which do you like better? ~M, A, & baby

I’d go with the Kealia because of the personal meaning.

Nohea means handsome, a term typically referred to for males, so I wouldn’t use it for a girl.

Where did you hear that it means handsome? Do you speak Hawaiian?

I would go with your heart and gut. If it is leaning towards Kealia, that is what I would use. I think it is very pretty. Good luck!

I like to look up names that I don’t recognize before I comment on them. Every baby name site that has it listed says it means handsome, or comely, of fine appearance. Personally wouldn’t use a name that reflects on appearance. Too much pressure.

I think the symbol over the A in Kealia will give her fits.

I like Nohea!

We live in Hawaii and many people have symbols over a letter in their name. Plus, she doesn’t even have to write it if she doesn’t want to. It’s not going to cause any problems.

If you still live in Hawaii, I wouldn’t use a place name from Hawaii. I think that would be a little weird for her. Maybe put it in the middle spot.

Kealia. Nohea isn’t very attractive for a little girl. If you’re having second thoughts about it then maybe you should just choose a new name all together. May I suggest a few names?

Kalani
Kalia
Leilani
Malana
Ona
Noelani
Kanani
Kaylani

There are many islands on Hawaii. Keālia beach, what we’re naming her after, is not on the island we live on.

We aren’t giving her a middle name. She is getting a first name and her traditional name.

No suggestions. We have a very particular style and most mainlanders seem to think Hawaiian names have to have lani in them.

Well, it sounds like you have made your decision. Enjoy your little Kealia!

Sincerely, A Mainlander ;-)
