Joana vs. Joanna

Which of these spellings do you like? Both would be pronounced Jo-anna. I am really liking Joana. But I wanted some opinions. I feel like it’s simpler being a slightly shorter spelling but would it end up being too confusing and make it not simple at all.

It could be pronounced as Joan-a, like Jonah

I think you could definitely do Joana, but it would be more confusing. It shouldn’t be, but it will. Also, poster #1 does have a point. Joana can be pronounced Joan-a (like Jonah); Jo-Aw-Na (like Ana in Frozen: Jo-Ana); or how you want it, Jo-Anna. So yeah, you might get a lot of hastle from that to. :/ I have nothing against Joana, I actually like that spelling better as well, but you should be aware of all the problems that come with it.

Yeah, I definitely can see the Joan-a (Jonah) thing.

Honestly, I really super like Joan. But my DH hates it. I don’t know why. I’m pretty sure he likes Joanna though. I love the nn Joanie. Could I still use it with Joanna?

Joanna gmv. A lovely, underused name that is easy to spell and pronounce.

I love Joan too, so my brain turns Joana into "Joan-a" not "jo-Ann-a." Too confusing for your daughter t live with, IMO. Good luck! :0)

P.S. Definitely use Joanie as a nickname for Joanna. :0) Nicknames don’t have to be scientifically drawn from the formal name. So if he isn’t into Joanna either, you might be able to talk him into Siobhan, Johanna, Sian, Jeanette, Gianna, etc.

I pronounce Joana as Jo-AW-nah. If you want the Jo-Ann-ah pronunciation, then go with Joanna. Joanie would be an absolutely adorable nickname for Joanna as well!

I’m totally with FredaCat on this. Totally use Joanie as a nickname! Love it ;D

If you go with Joana, I’d spell it Jo-Ana, or you won’t get the pronunciation you want.
