Seamus Middle vs. Please Help

Help!!! We’ve decided we both like the name Seamus for our next son. We have Irish heritage and think the name sounds good with our last name (McDonald). HOWEVER... we can’t think of a middle name. We have no idea what to do! Only thing we can think of is maybe using dad’s name (Brendan). Also, I’m a little nervous after talking to a few people... they don’t know how Seamus is pronounced. I’ve always known it was Shay-mus, so I never thought about it, but apparently some people have never heard of the name?? They think it’s See-mus?? Where does everyone come down on this?

The Top Baby Name is...

Seamus Middle

I say it the same way as you but I’ve heard it before and I live in Arkansas.

Séamus Oliver or Séamus Edward. Anyone who isn’t already familiar with this common Irish name will have no difficulty in learning it. Good luck! :0)

I thought it was See-Mus at first then I read more of you post and saw that you said that it is Shay-Mus. I think if you really like the name you will have to live with and learn that people might not know how to say it right. I think it is a very cute unique name! Go for it!

Maybe I just know it’s Shay-Mus because I grew up in the Harry Potter generation. It’s just so odd to me that people have never heard the name. It’s unique, but not unheard of. Very old and traditional.

I automatically think Shay-mus. Because of the Sea- beginning. It’s pronounced the same as it is in Sean. Most American people with no Irish heritage might not know how to pronounce it at first but they will catch on after the first correction.

It seems impossible to me people don’t know how to pronounce because everyone I know does

I have never heard of the name before. I think it will be a constant issue for your son. I would use it as a middle name, or change the spelling so people will be able to pronounce it.

Unfortunately, I guarantee you that most people he meets will probably mispronounce/misspell his name. Even the most common of names people can’t seem to get right, so a name like this will surely be butchered, and See-mus is not something very flattering to be mistaken with.
