I think Kate is a pretty name by itself..... But Katelyn (and its MANY variations) are all very very common, so be careful.

The name is fine, but it seems like more of a nickname for Kathleen, Katherine, Katerina, Katrina or Kaitlin. Kate by itself sounds sort of incomplete.

I like it better as a middle name than a first name. It kind of sounds like a rich snooty type of name.
