Meredith vs. Merida

We found out the gender of our baby a few days ago and our little PRINCESS is due to arrive on December 5th! We want something a little different. Nothing like Ava, Olivia, Scarlett, etc. We originally found Meredith and really liked it. But then we stumbled upon Merida, and also really like it! We know it is the name of a newer Disney princess but we think that since she isn’t a very popular one, that we can get by with it. A few friends have also told us that Meredith is more of a boy name, even though it is common on girls. What are your opinions on these names and which do you like better? Middle name is undecided. Merida immediately made me think of the disney princess and I’ve never even seen the movie, but Meredith is pretty! My sister is named Meredith, she’s sweet and unique and it suits her perfectly!

We don’t want other suggestions. We really like these two! We don’t like Marilyn or Matilda and Miriam is too old fashioned in my opinion. Tanner doesn’t like Edith. Please no other names, only opinions on Meredith and Merida ans whoch you like better. Thanks though! ~Bridget & Tanner

I love the name Merida, but right off, I have trouble pronouncing it properly...
MER-ida or Mer-IDA?
Meredith and Merida could both have the nickname Merry (or Meri)...(just a thought...)
Overall, I like both of them, though I like Meredith better, even if it is "more of a boy name".

What does everyone not like about Merida or not like about Meredith? Can you give us reasons why you pick one over the other please? Just so we can make a clearer decision. We think Merida is slightly prettier and more unique compared to Meredith. But we would love to hear what everyone else thinks about that. ~Bridget & Tanner

Merida is hard to figure out how to pronounce. Meredith is beautiful, classy, and sweet- neither obscure nor overused. It’s like a less trendy Madeline. I think it’s a great choice and sounds better with Kimble as well. As for the boy name thing, I’m totally confused..,

Merida is pretty and reminds me of the sea. The Mer in Merida seems more distinct than it is in Meredith, so perhaps that’s why.

To me, Merida seems more contemporary than Meredith without seeming weird while Meredith makes me think of a preppy sorority girl named after her great-grandmother.

Also, to add to that, Merida is able to be joined with an A name if you wanted for the middle name because of its soft A sound at the end.

For example, Merida Adeline is easier to pronounce than Meredith Adeline, as is Merida Avery.

Meredith Avery kind of turns into one word.

Just a thought while I continue to procrastinate...
