Amelia vs. Amelea vs. Amilea

Pronounced the same, but I’d like the nickname Lea and I do not like the spelling Lia. It does not matter to me if people will misspell it, because all you gave to do is correct them once then they’ll get it. What are your thoughts?

The full first name will have to be spelled out and written down a lot more than her nickname will. I think it makes more sense to go with the original spelling and correct people on the nickname spelling since it will have to be done far less often than if she had an oddly spelled full name.

Amelia, nn Lea, gmv.

My two cents: formal names are for putting your best foot forward, showing your style, education and gravitas. Using conventional spellings helps to associate the name with authors, humanitarians, historic figures, artists, etc. The goal is respect.

Nicknames, on the other hand, are for creativity, whimsy and just plain because-I-said-so. Spellings can be as unconventional as you please. The goal is personal expression.

If you child doesn’t like your particular personal expression they’ve got their formal name to use, or make their own nickname from. Everyone wins.

Others will disagree and there are no real "rules." Good luck! :0)

Agreed! FredaCat put so eloquently what we are all thinking. Also you won’t have pronunciation problems. I assume when a name is misspelled that there is a reason, ie different pronunciation. To me Lea is pronounced Leigh, like Pea.

Amelia is how it’ll get spelled 100% of the time anyway. Spell it those other two ways and you’ll be sentencing her to a life of headaches. I personally think Lea/Lia is kind of a stretch for a nickname. How about just calling her Amelia? Not all kids need nicknames.

We plan on using Lea 99% of the time, but we can’t name her Lea for several reasons so we wanted a full name for her. We never really plan on calling her by her full name. -Poll poster

I would spell Amelia the traditional way, and then just spell the nickname however you want. It’s easier and less confusing to say, "Lea without the H" than it is to say Amelia, but change the E to an I and the I to an E."

Plus, you might have people not say Amelia the correct way with a different spelling.

Personally, I adore the name Amelia, so cute. I can’t stand the nickname Lea.
