Lotty vs. not vs. Charlotte

Seven months ago I had a beautiful baby girl and we named her Lotty Grace - just Lotty, not Charlotte. We both adored Lotty but I knew a very unpleasant girl named Charlotte, so she tainted the name :(. We think Lotty is fine as a full name and it suits her so well. But my family and friends have not stopped telling me off all the last seven months for naming her ’a nickname’. They are literally going on about it soooo much. Are they being unreasonable or was I being silly, naming my baby just Lotty? And does it work OK as a name? Feedback requested thanks.

It works just fine as a name. Tell your family and friends to get over it & spend their energies loving your baby girl.

Same. I loved the name Charlotte until some horrible person ruined it for me. I love Lotty though.

People back in the Victorian days were named nickname names all the time. Even my grandmother was named Minnie not Minerva. I think it fine, Lotty is perfect!

I have the perfect solution, name her Lotta/Lotte (lot-tuh) its a German variant of Charlotte and it’s not the name Charlotte. Lotta Grace nicknamed Lotty is nice.

I agree Lotta is a nice alternative and it’ll make people stop nit picking over the name.

It’s gorgeous, and it’s done now. Your family will honestly learn to love it as she grows up.

It’s been seven months! Family needs to get over it. I have an aunt who named some of her kids nns because she believed you should name a child what you’re going to call them. There’s many ways and reasons to name a child. Your family presumably have been able to name their own children. This is your turn.

And Lotty is adorable.

They are definitely being unreasonable - she is your daughter and Lotty is a perfectly serviceable name anyway.
I would personally have Charlotte on the birth certificate, with 24/7 nn Lotty, but that is absolutely just personal preference and Lotty is a lovely name.
I’ve known a few girls who have nicknames on their birth certificate and they work fine. Your family are being quite silly to be honest. Lotty is a great name, it is not overly cutesy or anything.
Best of luck for you and your lovely ’lil Lotty! X

Just a thought - Carlotta could work... It would give her a full name but it’s not the ruined Charlotte. But Lotty works beautifully!

Never understood the point of full names. We were always going to call DD1 Mia, so why bother with the full Amelia. DD2 we would always call Tilly - why bother with Matilda. No need for Harriet, if we are always going to call her (DD3) Hattie. Lotty is beautiful. It doesn’t need to full Charlotte. To be honest your family are being totally unreasonable and ridiculous.
