Hyder vs. Hayder vs. Haider

My husband and I are not American by birth, but our children will be, and we want names that easily blend in with typical English names, but can still reflect our cultures and origins. My husband chose the name Raiden, for one of our sons, its the Japanese God of thunder. On this poll I have different transliterations of an Arabic names which means Lion.

It sounds like hater which is not a good thing. Hyder is just the word hider with a different spelling, which is also not a good name. I would find something else

I understand the connection with the word hider, but hater? How?

Agree with first poster, go back to the drawing board.

I think that poster said hater because she thought the second and third choices are pronounced "HAY-der." As I understand it, all spellings are intended to be pronounced "HYE-der" (hider), and that’s why I chose the first spelling option. The others do look more like HAY-der on their own.

I’m the last poster. Assuming Raiden is pronounced like I think, RAY-den, then you can definitely see that Raiden & Haider would be assumed to be HAYder...

I’m the pollster. Raiden is technically pronounced rie-den, but we are not going to force the Japanese pronounciation on English speakers. Ray-den will be fine. The name Hyder is indeed pronounced hi-der (as in the word "hi"). I say it outloud and don’t come up with with hater. The connection puzzles me a bit. Raiden and Hyder aren’t the first names we would have picked if we were living in our home countries. We love the names now, but we found them after actively trying to find names that don’t scream out "foreign kid", particularly because of my Middle Eastern origins. We want our children to blend easily in American culture without fear or being singled out. We just thought with all the Aidens, Jaidens, Sawyers and Ashers, we could go with names with similar endings and pretend they are trendy ideas rather than of foreign origin.

I wasn’t trying to criticize. I completely understand what you’re saying and I do think that Raiden and Hyder fit in with current American trends, especially Raiden. I’m really just trying to say that to get the pronunciation you are going for, Hyder is the best spelling. good luck!
