Marlene vs. Yes vs. No
I really like Marlene for my daughter’s name but I’ve heard from family and friends, especially my MIL, that it’s too old for a child. Do you like it? Can you suggest similar names? Also, can you suggest middle names for Marlene please as I can’t seem to find one I like. Thank you!

Are you pronouncing the last syllable of Marlene as "leen" or "laina" (like German actress Marlene Dietrich)? Names with "leen" endings are not very popular due to the older sound but some of them are ok. Marlaina would be a lovely alternative. It sounds less clunky.

I’m pronouncing it the European way: Mar-lay-nuh as I am from Germany. But, I don’t want to change the spelling to Marlaina/ Marlena. Thank you!

Marlene is nice enough although not really my style. It’s better than Marley though and I like your pronunciation. I notice you like middle names ending in A but I would advise you go with something simple that doesn’t just so it flows better.
Possible middle names:
Marlene Faye
Marlene Alice
Marlene Rose
Marlene Fleur
Marlene Eve
Marlene Elodie
Marlene Elise
Marlene Diane
Marlene Pearl
Marlene Opal
Marlene Topaz
GL!

I really love the name Marlene, especially pronounced the German way! Honestly, your only problem is that you told your mother-in-law in the first place! People will always have opinions (and family especially don’t censor themselves when it comes to hurtful comments), but telling them AFTER the baby is already born is usually safer because they’ll learn to associate the name with the cute baby and then they won’t be able to see her as anything other than a Marlene! That being said, I love the names Marlies and Marlis if you’re looking for other options. Good luck :)

I think Marlene (or Marlena) is just lovely ... ;o) Your MIL is out of step with current baby naming trends ... :o[] What’s old is new again! But if you want to go all wild and crazy, name her Mary Magdalene, nn Marlene ... doh!
MARLENE
GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: German, English
PRONOUNCED: mahr-LE-nÉ™ (German), MAHR-leen (English)
Meaning & History: Blend of MARIA and MAGDALENE. It refers, therefore, to Mary Magdalene, a character in the New Testament. The name was popularized by the German actress and singer Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992), whose real name was Maria Magdalene von Losch.
