William Michael vs. NICKNAMES
I am concerned about naming my boy William. I love the name but I don’t know about the nicknames. I love Will but do not care for Bill or Billy AT ALL. I am concerned that people will try to use these even though we will call him William or Will. What does everyone think about this? PLEASE COMMENT

Just constantly correct people, it will come out alright. They’ll start remembering. Another good nickname for William is Liam. If you like it, I think it would stick well. And I think that people are more likely to call him Will than Billy, I’ve never heard a William called Billy. Good luck, hope this helped!

Every William I know is called Billy except my nephew and he is Will. If you tell him what you want to call him, that’s what he will be called. No one ever called him Bill except my father and he was politely corrected. He has been Will ever since. He’s seven.

Just tell every one before hand that you have decided to name your child William and explain your concerns about the nn. And that should be enough that they respect your wishes and call him Will.

I am not worried about the family calling him Bill or Billy, they will call him what we do. But I am concerned about friends, school and work when he gets older. Then I guess he would correct them because he has always been called William or Will. RIGHT?

People (friends and teachers) will most likely call him Will. He will correct them if he’s used to it, right?

1. Constantly correct people. They might find it a bit irritating, but it’ll work in the end!
2. He may WANT to be called Billy etc, and if that happens you’re going to have to let it happen.
3. I know one Billy, but that is his name, not short for William. The William I know is named Will.
4. Do all of the above but ultimately let him decide! Let him have his freedom! And you’ll have to go with it. Explain to him young about his choice and go with it! Good luck, hope this helps!!!

My name is Elizabeth and since I was little, I’ve been called either Liz or Lizzy because that’s what my parents called me. I’ve been called Beth maybe once or twice but people usually just ask what I prefer or I just correct them if they call me Beth. Beth is not my name and never was. I wouldn’t worry about it.
