Girls Names vs. Like Austin?

I have a huge problem. I am pregnant with a little girl(not the problem though) and my husband has decided that he absolutely adores the name Austin for her. I absolutely hate it. I have no idea why he has all of the sudden taken interest in the trend of boy names on girls, maybe it’s because our friends named their daughter Beau. I asked him if he would ever name a son Emily, he said "He’ll be called a sissy for having a girl name, are you crazy!", but when I questioned him about why he wants Austin for our daughter he simply said "I think it will make her so cool among all of the girly Amelias and Violets on the playground.". I’ve tried unisex names like Blair and Avery but he doesn’t like those and I’ve even tried Audrey and Aubrey, he didn’t like those either. Are there any other girl names that are somewhat similar to Austin I could suggest to him? Or any other names in general I could suggest, even if they aren’t similar to Austin? I really don’t want to give my little girl a boy name but I’m running out of ideas! Thanks! ~Kayla

I made a rant poll yesterday about this brand of sexism. It’s preposterous that girls can be Austin and Logan but if a boy is named Phaedra he’ll be burned at the stake. Where is the line, folks?

You could ask him why he thinks boys names are cooler than girls names? And then maybe ask him what he thinks so cool *actual* girls names are? Or why particularly Austin rather than any other boys names?

I actually am fairly fond of Austen for a girl, because then it’s more like you’ve used the surname of Jane Austen the wonderful author rather than the name of a city which is common on boys. But there’s really not that much difference.
What about Aspen? It’s got the same feel as Austin but you could call her Penny?

Well socially- no matter if you think it’s "right" or not, it is proven than boys with girls named do get teased more than girls with boy names.

Having said that I love unisex names to an extent, I too do not care for Austin on a girl. Suggestions:

Payton
Riley
Emersyn
Marley
Finley
Teagan

Aster or Astrid are girls names that sound kind of similar.
Carlin, Seren and Marlen are all quite uncommon names with an -en ending that are girls names.

There is absolutely nothing attractive about a boy name on a girl and of the several I know, all but one have taken a "girly" nickname and about half write that girly nickname on their resume rather than their boyish name, despite the argument that "men get jobs more easily" because they don’t want to misrepresent themselves.

To all the RUDE commenters on her... I am an 18 year old GIRL named Riley. No my name isn’t "tacky", I actually love my name and I like having a name that fits well on someone that plays sports (tomboy) and on a girly girl as well because I am both.
I love my name, I love unisex names, and just because YOU don’t like them doesn’t make them TACKY!
As for the poster:
I’d find a happy medium. Maybe find a unisex name that is more commonly heard of on girls. Such as my name, Riley. I’ve only met one other boy Riley and he was in his thirties. Lol. I’ve known probably 30 girl Riley’s so far in my life.

Suggestions:
Sydney
Ashley
Bailey
Payton
Reese
Blaire
Delaney
Teagan

I’m really confused, I don’t see anyone except you claiming that your name is (or is not) tacky?Someone said they felt there was nothing attractive about boys names on girls? But no one said tacky. I quite like the name Riley on either sex. That being said, I know lots of girls who are sporty tomboys with very girly girl names and it works fine for them. So cool you like your name, I don’t think it’s tacky, but also lots of names do what your name does.

I think you have a good range of suggestions, I think finding out what it is he means by ’cool’ and why he thinks masculine is cooler is probably a good start.

Riley doesn’t count, these days it’s much more popular for girls as of 2002. That’s absolutely not comparable to Austin. Riley is truely unisex while Austin is a flat out boy name. As of 2002...of course you’re gonna meet more girl Rileys than boys, doesn’t change its origins it just means a trend is happening. When I hear Riley on television it’s boys and girls. And it’s in the Top 200 for boys still... When I hear Austin on television it’s boy. When I see Austin in real life it’s a boy.

Growing up as a tom boy with my name, Abigail was annoying I have always hated my name. Though my best friend was Jordyn and she was a girly girl and pulled it off fine. I’ve always wished I had a unisex name like Reese or Riley

Growing up as a tomboy with the name Caroline was fine. So it really depends on the child.
I think the main thing here is that you don’t like it, even if it was a girly girl name if you didn’t like it that’s enough to have it vetoed. Both parents should at least like, if not love, the name they pick.
I associate Riley with Disney’s female character in Inside Out now, but I also can see it on a boy. True unisex. Austin, not so much.

Why do you bend over backwards? Just tell him NO! you don’t like and you wont be using it and he better come up with alternatives you BOTH can agree to.
And just for the record - boys names on girls are BORING and really, really irritating, and so not cool
