Aspen vs. Sounds like...
Hi!
I was set on the name Aspen for my daughter, but while reading reviews of the name online, people say it sounds like ’Ass pin’ and ’Asparin’
Does it? For me, I can hear it but I didn’t until is was pointed out. What does it sound like to you?
The Top Baby Name is...

I always here Ass Pen/Ass Pin. It’s a shame because I do like the name. Also if you say Asp*n is then the site will remove it for putting pen and is next to each other. I middle school I can imagine children being quite cruel for having Ass. Pen. and Is. spelling/sounding out what it does.

I would not have thought of that connection on my own. Kids might figure it out and tease her for a year in elementary school but I think she’ll get through that just fine. Kids will look for anything to tease, no matter how innocuous the name is.

My 16 year old daughter is named Aspen. And she is quite popular in school. She’s never had any jokes or bad remarks made towards her for the way her name sounds. When I was pregnant, people warned me of the way it sounds, but 16 years later and we’ve never had an issue. If you love it then go for it. I don’t think you will have as many issues as people say you will.

It does kinda. Sorry. Maybe go for Arden (ahr-den). It has a similar nature connection and it’s less common. (fun fact: Mary Arden was the mother of William Shakespeare.) GL!

My sister is called Frances Avery and kids at school called her Fanny Ovaries. If kids get that from Frances Avery I think they can get way more creative with Aspen.

I know a few girls named Aspen of various ages, 6-14, and I don’t think they’ve ever had anyone make bad jokes or anything about the way the name sounds. But it is true that kids will find a way to make jokes about anything these days. Even a name as innocent as Maya could bring teasing these days. If you love Aspen then go for it. I think you will regret not using it if you really love it.

I never would have thought of it but if you did then I wouldn’t use it. Sounds like a beautiful ski resort to me.

I forgot to say - We would probably be using Penny as a nickname, and she might even go by it at school. I guess that lessens the connection with ’rude words’ but I hate to think of anyone making fun of her because of the name I gave her.

I don’t like Penny as a nickname for Aspen. If that’s the case then I would reconsider

It reminds me of Aspie, which is a term (normally a positive self identifier) people for people with Asperger’s.

I think it is fine as long as you don’t use Anna for the middle name.
