Blended family vs. conflicting vs. names

My husband and I are expecting our first child together, a little girl. He has three other daughters from his first marriage who have really masculine names, Charlie Ryan 11, Kevin Garner 9 and Carson Grey 6. I want to give our daughter a very feminine name but I worry that it will sound like we have three boys and one girl. Should we find a unisex first name or should we just name her the name we love which is Gemma Brielle? Thanks! ~Kellie

Thank you first 2 posters! Poster 3, my husband’s first wife chose their names, I’m not a fan either but your comment would have been more helpful if you’d have given feedback on our daughter’s name.:)

You should use the name you like the best. You could always use a unisex middle name if there is one you like. But "Jim/Gem" is a unisex nickname if she wants to be like her sisters.

Maybe a softer more accepted unisex name like:
Hadley
Reese
Riley
Jaiden
Marley
Reilyn
Peyton

I’d go with the name you love because her sister’s name will sound masculine regardless.

I’d avoid the standard unisex names such as Hadley, Reese, Riley, Peyton (eww) . . .

If you stepdaughters agree, you could give them cute girls nicknames!!!! That would be a great bonding experience.

Back to your original question. I think that Gemma is a little to girly in comparison.

Jamie Brielle would be a good fit.

I would suggest a starndard unisex name, poster 8- there is no need to target a specific poster just because you don’t agree, but nevertheless, Jamie is a standard, generic unisex name as well so you completely controdict yourself.

I think Riley would go very well. I know sister named Riley and Carsyn.

Reese or Riley would fit in, they are indeed unisex names but lean to the girls side based on popularity, so not completely masculine but compliment the others nicely and don’t stand out.

If you choose a masculine name to match the theme of his three older daughter’s names, it’s going to seem like you have 4 sons instead of 4 girls. Go with the one you love. Honestly, Charlie(which is used A LOT as a nickname for Charlotte) and Carson are basically unisex these days, so not everyone will automatically think those two are boys. But they definitely will with Kevin. His ex-wife was crazy to give the poor girl that name! Sorry off topic but I had to say it haha.

I think Gemma Brielle is gorgeous! And Gem would be a nice nickname. I know a teenage boy named Jeremy who goes by Jem. So I think Gem would fit in if she decides she wants a more "boy-ish" name to go by like her sisters. If you both love Gemma Brielle then go for it!

Go with the name that you love! Don’t limit the names you use just because of an ex-wife who apparently really liked boy names on girls or always wanted a boy so she just stuck the boy names on the girls. If you love Gemma Brielle then there is no question to be asked here! You will regret not using the name you love just because of the names of the three older girls.

I hate Gemma. Love Brielle for a middle name though.

Posters 9 and 12 - Did you two wake up on the wrong side of the bed?

I agree with poster 8. There is not wrong with a good bonding experience with step-children.

Gemma Brielle is pretty. Go with your heart!

I love how people can’t just say use Gemma but must also insult the ex-wife and psycho analyze why she picked those names. Who cares that you are really insulting children who can’t control their parent’s action because I have shown my superiority by saying how much better I am at baby naming.

Why not just ask the older ones what they think of the name? Or let all three of them give you middle name suggestions for the name Gemma. If they feel included in the process they won’t care about the difference. I know sisters one has a girly name one has a unisex name, it is no big deal. It is never mentioned. And seriously who cares if strangers assume wrong, they learn the truth and act accordingly.

You don’t have to name your daughter a boy name or unisex name because his ex did !! That’s ridiculous i love Gemma!!

Don’t give her a boy name just to make them feel better! That’s their Moms mistake. Go with Gemma! Please
