Can The name Joey vs. Work for a girl??

*** please read before you comment*** all I want to know is yes or no. Please don’t suggest Josephine or anything like it. Joey can stand on its own just fine as a first name. And not for just a nickname. So please yes it can work or no.

Yes. I know a woman named Joey.

I would spell it joie to make it look a little more feminine but I think either way it’s doable for sure!

No. She will always be asked what her real name is.

I’d say no - maybe if you absolutely cannot use a longer name and nickname/cannot live without naming your daughter this.
There is a character in the West Wing called Joey Lucas, and it works on her (and she’s awesome). But in the show a lot of the time there is frustration that she gets mistaken to be a man, especially as she is deaf and usually has a male translator with her - so people assume Joey is him, not her.

I would really recommend it as a nickname, but I think it is useable if you’re prepared (and don’t think she’ll mind) for her to be misgendered a lot.

Never thought of spelling it Joie. Thank you very much.

Joie looks like a strange spelling of Joy to me, I’m not sure it would be said right. If you’re going to call her Joey then call her Joey. I’m not sure it works, but if you’re going to do it I think the regular spelling is better.

I love Joey on a female, though I prefer to give kids options. Naming her Josephine and calling her Joey means that she can choose to go by Josephine later in her life if she feels it fits her personality better.
Other than that, yes Joey is fine.

Thank you to those who are just saying yes or no.

If you wanted JUST yes or no, it would have been easier to make us vote. Then you could ignore the comments and just have numbers.

No.

Absolutely! I know you said just yes or nos but i cant help myself. I LOVE UNISEX NAMES!

Joey isn’t technically unisex, at least not by usage. Definitely a boys name.

Is it usable on a girl? Yes.

But it is a boys name at the moment.

No it’s ok. I just don’t need people to explain or try to suggest other names like I asked not to. I made my poll the way I wanted. And somtimes votes get "stuffed" :)

No, sorry.

Jo could work for a girl, but not Joey. Joy is a close alternate.
posted by guest :: 7 years ago | report
Not looking for any alternatives but thank you.... And if Jo can work I don’t see why Joey can’t. Basically the same

No.
Joie is French for Joy, so also no.

Nickname only, so no. (Same is true of Jo).

For three reasons, no. One, Joey is a boys name and boys names on girls drive me crazy. Two, Joey on it’s own is not a good name for a boy or girl. It’s a nickname and nicknames as full names look weird, incomplete, and unprofessional. Three, Joey as a nickname for Joanna, Josephine, or another name would be a fine name for a girl, but making it so she doesn’t have the option to go by Joanna (or whatever) but rather has to good by Joey isn’t fair. I say definitely not, it won’t work well for a girl.

NO. Okay for someone in diapers maybe, but that only last a couple years, this kid has to grow up and it does not work at all for a girl who looks like a girl instead of the anonymity of babyhood
posted by guest :: 7 years ago | report
Yeah it sure can.My dad’s real first name is Joey, so of course it can work as a girls first name.
