Sheridan (Sheri) Aubrey vs. Yes? vs. No?

So, in our last poll someone said using this name would be like child abuse. That really shook me. What we are trying to do is find a compromise between one of us who loves unisex names and one who wants a bit more feminine. We though this name was nice because while unisex, it leans a bit more feminine and has a cute feminine nickname (Sheri). But why did someone think it was so bad? Please give us any feedback/insight into this choice. We were feeling good about it until that comment. Thank you.

The person who said that was way overly rude! However, I also don’t care for the name. (Sheridan).. It sounds made up (even if it isnt) and it sounds more masculine than feminine by a long shot. What about
Sharren (NN Sheri) or Cherly (NN Sheri).. There are other options... Uhm.. Yeah.

I don’t think it’s child abuse but Indont think its a good name either. There is a very busy street called Sheridan in my city so I can’t imagine it on a baby and the nickname Sheri makes me think of a 60 year old chain smoker. It’s very dated.

I don’t love the name but I’ve seen way worse on here. And there are nicer ways to say you don’t like the name than that.

I agree with posters above. It’s an ugly name. I wouldn’t consider is child abuse, but it would be pretty close.

When I hear it, I think of Sheridan Smith, who is female so I don’t think it’s ’child abuse’ nor that it’s overly masculine.
An alternative nickname could also be Ria (Ree-uh) maybe??

I don’t think it’s ugly. And definitely not child abuse. That’s just silly. It’s like Sullivan and Kerrigan. Both surnames and are used on children. If you love the name that’s all that matters. It’s your child at the end of the day. But if you are unsure, use Sheridan as a middle name.

The last commenters are wrong. It is ugly. So ugly.

a) this is a total guys name, no girl should EVER be saddled with something like this, no matter how many people incorrectly squawk about unisex, it does not even look in feminine’s direction let alone lean that way
b) it’s an okay name for a boy, in fact, but utterly and completely hideous on a girl.
c)if you like it that much then use Sheridan in the middle, but find a name that is actually gender appropriate for a first name, give her one shot at a feminine name

I don’t think it’s abuse. I don’t like Seridan. I think it sounds pretentious but if that’s your style then whatever. Just please don’t call her "Sheri" unless youbwantbher to sound half a century older than her peers.

How is anyone "wrong" poster 7. There will be people who agree it’s ugly and some that disagree and love it.

No one is wrong, not everyone loves the same names. Like poster 6 said, if you are unsure, make it the middle name.

With that being said, I do like the name. And if you love it then use it. It shouldn’t matter what others think. Hey, you could’ve picked a worse name lol.

Good luck to you. At the end of the day, use your own judgement and go with your gut ;)

Aubrey is technically unisex - would you consider that for a first name?
Ashby is also similar!

Aubrey Sheridan flows better and is easier for a female to carry.

Sherry is very cute, not need to clog it all up with the masculine surname. Aubrey is technically a man’s name being used currently on girls in the whole boys name on girls thing, so I guess Sheridan is that too.

Sheridan is very unusual, but by usage it’s a unisex/female name. In 2015 there were between 0-4 boys named Sheridan (can’t be sure as when it’s that low it doesn’t get recorded for privacy reasons - there definitely aren’t 5+). In 2015 there were 34 girls named Sheridan. Between 2010-2015 that’s pretty much been the trend, sometimes there have been about 6 boys and 63 girls (2010), sometimes it’s been all girls (2012 and 2015), but mostly it’s around 30-35 girls and 6-10 boys per year get called Sheridan. It’s a unisex/girls name by usage. It’s just also very rare.

I wouldn’t use it personally, it’s not really my style. But I do like the name, it’s close to Madigan which is another name I like. I think it’s perfectly fine and definitely not abusive! There are very few, if any, names I would consider to be abusive and Sheridan certainly isn’t one of them.

Sheridan Aubrey is cute. Sheri is a sweet nickname.

I wouldn’t use it myself. But it’s a name that could grow on someone. If you guys like it then use it. Everyone has their own styles.

The only place I’ve ever really heard the name is on a female soap opera character.Plus it sounds quite similar to the female Sharon and also sort of reminds me of Shannon and Erin so I don’t know why people are finding this masculine. To me it’s all girl I could never imagine a boy named Sheridan.I think he would be teased.
It seems like it’s gotten to the point on this site that if it’s not Ella,Olivia or Charlotte everyone is automatically going to hate it.Everyone seems afraid of anything even remotely different/not in the top 20.
I think the name is lovely. Please don’t let a rude comment ruin it for you!

I actually really like the name Sheridan. I think it is cute for a little girl (nn Dani?) and sophisticated as she grows older. You will never find a name that pleases everyone so go with one that you love. I think Sheridan Aubrey is a lovely choice.

Sheridan is so uncommon that it really is genderless and the people around her will associate female to Sheridan because she is the only one they know. I think Sheridan Aubrey is nice.
As far as the comments on here, people tend to lean toward the over dramatic and widely unproven generalizations. Your child will be traumatized for life, you secretly wanted a boy, that is child abuse. Or they tend to think that their opinion is fact. Because I think it is ugly everyone else does too. Or because I think it sounds masculine everybody does too. They can’t accept that it is only an opinion and that other people can feel differently based on different life experiences. If they aren’t giving you constructive criticism ignore it.

I think the people who don’t like your name probably named their kids off the top 100 list because they can’t seem to think outside of the box. Once your baby is named, it will be cute and you see that any other name would not have worked!! :) stick to your guns and be original!

I think Sheridan is a unique name. I actually am surprised I like it as much as I do. I vote YES!

I’m surprised that the majority of the posters are against Sheridan. (I’m not a fan either.)

Sheri is perfect just the way it is as a first name.
The problem is that Sheri Aubrey don’t flow well together.

I’d stick with Sheri as her official first name and find another middle name.

Love it! Don’t let anyone stop you from going with your gut. People may hate but if they do that’s their problem not yours. The only people whose opinions matter right now is you and your significant others.
