Briar-Rose vs. Brier-Rose vs. Bryer-Rose
It was recently brought to my attention that spelling my daughters name Briar, might at sometimes, be confused for Brian. I want to avoid this. I know Brier is another correct spelling, but I really don’t want anyone to try to NN her Bree/Brie. Bryer is spelling the word wrong, but I personally think it looks prettier and will influence people to NN her Bry. I want to name my daughter this name. I know it’s a Disney princess.. And I know it’s a T[removed] bush, but I really don’t mind. I personally would have loved to have been named after a princess.. And really, the movie isn’t nearly as popular anymore. Most little girl’s in this next generation won’t even know. Don’t be rude. Don’t try to change my mind. Just help me think. Lol. Thanks!

I like it just as you picked it originally.
I’d stick with Briar.
I don’t think the Briar/Brian confusion is going to happen as much as whoever told you that thinks. Briar is an increasingly popular girls name and the average person will see the r instead of an n. Also, the average person will see a little girl in front them and figure out her name is Briar not Brian even if her name wasn’t said clear as day.
It all depends on what you like the best. If you love Briar-Rose because you think it’s beautiful and will make you feel better about any potential confusions or nickname issues then DO IT!
Personally, I like Briar Rose (no hyphen). Not too sure about just Briar with a different middle name.
But she is your child and her name is up to you. Don’t be bullied, do what you feel is right for her and your family. Good luck!

Briar Rose gmv.
I don’t think it will be confused with Brian that much, and even if it is it’s still worth it. The Brier spelling looks odd to my eyes and the Bryer one reminds me of the ice cream brand Breyer’s. Also, Bryer feels masculine for some reason and completely ruins the whole princess vibe.
Briar Rose is a lovely name. There’s no need to feel defensive about it, or to forget to put a "please" before ordering us not to be rude or try to change your mind. I’m sure that was just an oversight. Good luck! :0)

I’ve mentioned this before on the polls, but in the part of the country in which I live, calling someone a Briar/Brier is a derogatory term. It’s basically calling someone a hick or a hillbilly. The name would definitely raise some eyebrows and probably result in some teasing by some folks. Even though I don’t use the term, I always do a double take when I see this used as a name. I just can’t quite get past that it’s typically use as an unflattering slang term. Having said that, confusing Briar with Brian never occurred to me.

Thanks everyone. I’m not worried about her being bullied over it, poster 5. Where I’m from, it’s not used as an offensive term. Ever. I don’t really get why it is where your from. A Briar bush is beautiful. It represents something beautiful with its roses, and something able to defend itself with its thorns. But thank you for your input, I wouldn’t have known that people use it in such a fashion. I’m going to go with Briar-Rose Violet for her name. Violet is just getting thrown in there to honor a great great grandmother of my husband’s. Thank you all so much for all your positive feedback! (: -Original Poster

I think spelling it Briar is absolutely fine! I wouldn’t spell it Bryer though; that reminds me of Breyer’s Ice Cream and Breyer horses. If you want the nickname Bry, the spelling isn’t necessary to influence people either! My twin’s name is Brian and people have called him Bri all his life even though the spelling isn’t Bryan.
