Alistair vs. Alister vs. Allister

We are naming our son Alistair, but are worried about pronunciation issues. Alistair is the original spelling pn Al-uh-stir. We noticed some friends calling him Al-uh-stare or stair as in walk up stairs. Should we change the spelling? If so which is the best? Thanks!

I wouldn’t have pronounced it like the word "stair" because I’ve heard the name out loud before, but I can see where some people might pronounce it that way phonetically. I would still definitely go with Alistair over Alister and Allister. Alister looks too much like the term "A Lister." Maybe some people won’t pronounce it correctly at first, but correct them once and it should be fine. Plus, unless it’s a teacher or someone reading the name, most of the time you introduce yourself verbally, so they would hear him pronounce it right off the bat!

If you’re worried, maybe you could look into using the Greek version, Alastor? It’s an epithet of Zeus and also the name of a few other people in Greek Mythology. Good luck :)
