Sophia vs. Pronounced vs. Soh-fye-ah
Hi there. Expecting our second baby girl - our first is called Jessica. We like the name Sophia after a good family friend, however she says it as Soh-fye-ah not Soh-fee-ah and so we would want to use the same pronunciation. Do you think her name would be constantly said wrong? Thanks!

I doubt that anyone would get it right without you telling them as so-fee-ah is the original and most common pronunciation. I would change the spelling if you really want the pronunciation. Sophaia or Sophaya would probably make the most sense, like a combination of Sophia and Maia/Maya.
Good luck!

I think it would be totally ok to name her after your friend Sophia, but pronounce it the "regular" way, because that’s how everybody is going to pronounce it for the rest of her life. I also think that nobody will spell it Sophia. Sophaia is the best I can think of for a spelling that would make sense for that pronunciation. I get that you want to honour your friend, but as someone with a name that no one ever spelled right, I can say that being named Sophia prn soh-FEE-ah would really help her and make her life easier.

Just don’t do it, or use it as a middle name.

Yes, it will be continually mispronounced. I went to school with a girl named Christina, pronounced kris-TINE-uh. Very confusing. I’d go with it as a middle name.

Sophia after your friend would be fine with the regular pronounciation. Make it easier for your daughter rather than her having to continually correct people.
