To specify the reason behind these names... A buddy of mine died in iraq, and I was hoping to tie in his name.

What was his name, and maybe I could be of more help. I personally would only choose Zachary, because the rest don’t look very classy or professional. However, I appreciate what you would like to do. Having a different spelling may require him to always correct people and always repeat the story of why his name is spelled "wrong". What if you gave him your friends name as a middle name, or a second middle name if you have a specific name you are already using.

Sorry, I didn’t see your other poll below. Since this if for a girl (and I know understand the full story) I think Zakaria would be most appropriate. It draws the name away from Zachary enough to allow it to sound feminine as well as giving your daughter her own name, while still retaining the meaning and significance. I think any spelling that would be pronounced like Zachary would not be fair to her as a female. Zakaria as a full name and with Kari or Karia as nicknames would be a nice name for your daughter.

Another option would be picking a similar name, such as Zara, Carrie, Cara (car-uh), or Kari (car-ee). Also, you could pick a nice name that has meaning, such as Liberty nn Libby, or Honor.

Liberty Zakaria
Honor Zakaria
Cara Liberty
Zara Honor

Honor Zara could be directly translated to your family as meaning honor Zachary. The other names tie in his name with meanings that would have relevance to his duty as a soldier and defender of this country.

When I read Zakaria, it made me think of Zecharia, since I pronounce them exactly the same...Zecharia being a bible prophet in the old testament.

If its a girl, I like the Zara suggestion.
