Male Form vs. Of Catherine vs. ??

Hi! We are thrilled to be welcoming a second child into our family. Our four-year old daughter is named Henrietta Frances whom we refer to as Hattie. We really want to honor my mother-in-law, Catherine regardless if we have a boy or girl but we're having a hard time coming up with a male variant of Catherine. Can you think of any? We are open to first name suggestions as well, for either sex (we are considering Anneliese Catherine for a girl but not sold on it at this time). Thank you! -Charlotte and William

Wren, Cassie, or Cate/Kate would be so cute for a girl.

Charles/Charlie for a boy

We aren't looking for female variants of Catherine, sorry! Catherine will stay exactly as Catherine as a middle name if we have a girl so we're only looking for first name suggestions that are unrelated to Catherine. Again, sorry if that was a mix up!

Charles is nice but it reminds me more my name, which in truth makes me feel a bit weird, rather than my mother-in-law's name. I also just realized that I never stated but the male variant will also be used as a middle name!

We really enjoy the ideas of Cathal, Cathán, and Cato! We also love Augustus, Edmund, and Archibald as a first name! Sebastian is great as well however that is my godson's name.

Aikaterine is the Ancient Greek feminine form of Katherine but I think it could work on a boy.

Cătălin is the Romanian male version of Catherine (According to behindthename) not sure on how well that would work in America / or exactly how it's pronounced.

One of the possible meanings (and the most accepted) of Catherine is "pure" so you could go with a boy name meaning pure, like Candido/Candidus. But there's not a lot of boy names with that meaning so I'm not sure if you'll have much luck on that front.

Or you could just use Catherine, how many times do you truly tell people your middle name anyway? It's generally just an initial.

We actually like Candidus! We considered simply using Catherine but it just doesn't seem "right" to us to use it on a boy.

Before you call your child Candidus, be aware that Candida is a fungal infection.

The first name wouldn't be Candidus, it would be a middle name only (as would any of the variants) but that is good to know, thank you!

I just recently met a little boy named Cates which I thought was really surprising and handsome! When I heard it I actually wished that I had a Catherine to honor.
Edmund Cates would be insanely handsome. I'm kind of in love with it actually :)

What about using Catherine's maiden name for a son?
posted by Guest :: 8 years ago | report
Her maiden name isn't really "name suitable" in our opinion but we really appreciate the suggestion! As of now we really like Cathán and Cates followed by Cathal and Cato

I was born with Kathryn as my middle name and I changed it when I changed my gender but I wish I had given it more thought and changed it to a masculine form to honor my mother like: Caterino, Kieran, Kevin, katerine or Caterine, Katryn, Catrine, Kateryn, Kahryn, Cahrine, Kahryn, Kitryn, Kithryn, Kethryn, Kade, Kader, Kaderyn, Caderyn Therin, Theron, Kato, Aikitryn, Catalin-romanized official, Katheros, Kathret, Cathrit, Catrit, Cathrinus, Cathan, Cattrit. The name is to honor the person more than to be like the definition of the name.
