Chaney (FOR) vs. Cheney (A) vs. Chaynie vs. Chainey (GIRL)

Cheney(chay-nee) is a family name used on all first borns in my family, both boys and girls. Everyone else(literally) have used it as a middle name for their children but my husband and I want to use it as a first name for our child. We are having a girl for our first and yes we are absolutely set on it as a first name! We aren't asking for opinions on the name itself, just the spelling. Should we stick with the original spelling Cheney or go with either Chaney or Chaynie? Chaney is my idea but my husband likes more unique spellings so he prefers Chaynie. I don't mind Chaynie but the logical thinker in me says Chaney would be better if we do change it. My compromise for it is Chainey though. Which spelling do you think would be better? ~Amanda

I think if it's an honor name, you should spell it the way it is to honor whoever it is had the name...if you purposely misspell a name, is it really honoring someone? That's just my opinion though. Plus, Cheney is easier to spell.

I think it depends on how it should be pronounced. Cheney to me looks like it would be said Chen-ee, rhymes with Jennie. haney looks like Chan-ee rhymes with Danny. If it should be pronounced Chain-ee, then I like the spelling Chaynie.

Cheney is pronounced CHAY-nee, it will be said this way no matter what spelling is used as that is how it has always been said. This is why we are concerned about spelling since we are using it as her first name, we don't want people to constantly mispronounce it. We have asked my family about it, everyone is perfectly fine with hs changing the spelling. They understand the concern of pronunciation with Cheney and told us to do what we think would be better in the long run. But we can't decide which one would be better in the long run.
