It's not the worst I've ever heard! Essence is actually quite sweet. However you need a middle name that won't make it sound like a perfume.

Love Essence! I think it is sooo sweet! Great choice. Essie is also a sweet nickname.

I'm not a fan of this word for a name but to each their own. Since it is very unusual, I would pair it with something simple, traditional and more mainstream. Since it's heavy on the "s" sounds, I would avoid any name which contains that letter. Here are some suggestions:

It's more of an aroma than a name. Have you tried repeating it lots of times, maybe try the baby name test drive above to see if you really like it. Too many S sounds for me.
