Mireille (meer-AE) vs. Mirae/Miray

We live in the US, but we are the only people in our entire families that do. Every other family member is in France. We want a French name, but we also want it to work on an girl that will grow up in the US. This is our favorite name. If we spell it Mireille, our families will be happy (and we will too), but most Americans may say it wrong. If we change the spelling to Miray/Mirae, Americans will be able to pronounce it, but our family probably wont like that we're changing the spelling of the name. We visit France at least once a year, and our daughter will (hopefully) be fluent in both English and French. We are pretty sure we will use this name either way its spelled. thanks! -L and J

Maybe it's better off as a middle name? Will you ever move back to France? If so, I think stick with the traditional spelling. However, I think many people will pronounce it wrong.

IMO you should spell it the original way; people will call her what you you call her, so, while annoying at times, pronunciation shouldn't be too much of an issue. It's a lovely name, either way! GL!

It's gorgeous! Keep the original spelling and people will become familiar with it.

Personally, I wouldn't change the spelling. Part of Mireille's charm is the way it looks. It would not be the same name and would lose its French heritage if you changed it.

America is a multi-cultural country. The more people get used to diversity (and that includes unfamiliar names), the easier it will get. Keep Mireille as she is - she's a beauty!

Go with the "proper" spelling and use it as an opportunity to let Americans learn how to pronounce French names ... ;o)

@poster 1, we haven't ruled out the possibility of someday going back to France permanently, but we aren't planning it currently. She will most likely grow up for her childhood in the US. We also have dual citizenship.

I would use the tradicional spelling! People will learn how to pronounce it. I don't like the spelling Mirae.

I'd go with Mireille! I don't know why some people on this site always make it seem like people are incapable of learning! All you have to do is say a name once and people will get it. And most of the time, you introduce yourself verbally so people will know how it's pronounced right off the bat! Genevieve is absolutely correct...America (assuming that is where you live) is a multicultural country and immigrants from all around the world and their descendants live here. I grew up with and work with people with Indian names, Chinese names, Pakistani names, Serbian names, Swedish names, and Lithuanian names just to name a few. Some of those names were obviously not common or commonly spelled, but it was never any big deal. They tell you how to pronounce it and then you know how to say it. Mireille isn't even that long...only two syllables. It will be very easy for people to learn! Plus, I think it looks much nicer visually than Mirae. Good luck :)
