Callaghan vs. Callahan vs. Callahanne
So we were totally set on naming baby girl Callaghan "Cali" Rose, but once we shared the name with family and friends we got a lot of negative feedback. Not always explicitly negative, but nothing very positive. (I'm beginning to wish I just hadn't said anything until she is born.) We had several people saying it Callag-han, with a hard "g," even after we explained that it is the traditional spelling of a surname with a lot of meaning to us. I began to doubt our choice a little and thought maybe it would save Cali the trouble in the future to just remove the "g" so that her name is more phonetic: Callahan. I have nothing against this spelling, in fact, it has grown on me a little as I have toyed with it some. I'm wondering if it might be in our best interest to leave out the "g"...the last thing I want is for my daughter to hate the name I so carefully chose for her because it is too "weird" (or just different.) But I still love our original Callaghan, too. The third option, Callahanne, is kind of a joke, for those people who have so ~kindly~ informed me that I need to give my daughter a "feminine" name. I personally think Callaghan/Callahan is pretty for a girl, and considering we will most often call her Cali or Cali Rose, it really shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks all, I could really use some honest, helpful, feedback or advice!

Why not just Cali Rose? (Callie looks more complete) if you'll mostly call her that anyway? Just curious.

It's too much of a masculine surname for me to even think of as a girl name. Callie is perfect.

I really think Callahan is the only way to go. All other spellings look masculine or just plain complicated.

Don't make it harder than it has to be... Callahan is less of a headache for a lifetime of explaining "no the G is silent".

What about Rose Callaghan? You could use Cali Rose as the nn (I prefer Callie too)

If Callaghan/Callahan has special meaning to you, go with it! She is YOUR child. I voted without the g just because of your comment about her always having to spell it for people, though with the unusual name she may have to anyway so I guess either one is beautiful for your beautiful girl!

I don't see how Callahan is too "masculine" for a girl in a world full of female Madisons, Logans, Spencers, Carters, etc. but of course we live in a sexist world.

My daughters name is Lennon, there will ALWAYS be negative opinions with whatever name but especially a name more "out there". If you want to name your daughter Callaghan then do it.

If you must use this name, which I wouldn't recommend at all, then respect the spelling and use Callaghan.

I think it works better in the middle spot if it is a family surname. If you are set on using it as a first name, I would spell it Callahan. You might also try having a friend wear the name and watch the reactions she gets. It might change your mind about using it.

Callaghan with the 'g.'
If I saw 'Callahan' written I would assume it was a boy name. However, if I saw it with the 'g' I would be more likely to think of it as unisex because I would realize it was a (Irish?) surname that had special meaning to the parents. In my opinion FAMILY surnames can be used for either a boy or girl.

Just reading this gives me a headache. Just think what she'd have to go through for her whole lifetime.
I'd put it in the middle and give her a girl's first name.
