They are not just different spellings they are different names with different pronunciations the first is 2 syllable the second 1, so decide if you want an Irish surname,meaning "descendant of RUADHÁN" or Frisian short form of Germanic names beginning with the element hraban meaning "raven".

Rowan is a tree, the Mountain Ash.
Roan is a coat color in animals.

As poster 1 pointed out they are pronounced totally differently.

Roan rone rhymes with phone.
