Gunner vs. Gunnar

Okay so I've finally decided to make my little cowboy Gunner but I'm not sure what spelling to use. I love gunner cause it's pretty straight forward and I just like the look of it but Gunnar is apparently the "original" and is more of a name then an occupation (going on what other people have told me). Please give me your opinions!

And it says the meaning of Gunnar is warrior and the meaning of gunner is battle strong

Gunnar, for the reasons named. Normally I don't have an issue with occupation names, but one where it refers to gunning people down?
