I do like Rainer quite a bit but we're for sure just going with Rayne/Rane. Would Rain or Raine be better?

Not really, I find Raine/Rain feminine. I think Ray part of your spelling give it a masculine vibe and the option of going by Ray if he doesn't like Rayne. But will be a hassle for him spelling wise. I would not pronounce Rane as Rain though.

I think Rain/Raine is mostly used for girls. Any Ra- spelling strikes me as feminine, and parents often use the letter y to signal "girl," so Rayne isn't a great pick, either. Rane is a little better. I don't like Reign, but what do you think of Rein?
