Might be a bit too farfetched. Why not do a double middle name? Alaska Vivi Anne "Ava" or an -a ending middle name, Alaska Virginia or Alaska Verona?

What's so wrong with Allie, Laz/Les, Laska, Alas/Alice or Sky? I quite like Laska, it's unique and Sky is cute too.

How do you get Ava form Alaska? Just name her Ava.

I feel like if you name her Alaska and then just call her Ava a lot of people will wonder why you even bothered to name her Alaska.

Alaska doesn't need a nickname. She wouldn't be the only person in the world with a somewhat longer name and no nickname. I can name a good few I know right off the bat including a Michaela, an Elliott, an Isabelle, and a Rebecca who all just go by their full names. If you name her Alaska and call her Ava she will likely have to explain a good few times since not everyone will know she has a V middle name. Lile on school rosters most of the time they just put first and last names. So she'll have people asking her where Ava came. Just call her Alaska if that is the name you like best. No need to complicate things for her later on by giving her a nickname that is a good stretch from her full name.

Ava is so popular that she will be 1 of many meaning the nickname will just be redundant for her in school since she will likely just end up going by Alaska anyways so she can avoid being "Ava (last initial/last name)" all the time.
