Maisy, after grandma & the cat? vs. just go for it vs. pick something else

At 16, I helped name the family cat Maisie. At the time, it had been my favorite name, and I was being sneaky about getting my mom's opinion. Turned out, it was well loved, and decidedly the cat's name. 15 years later, it's still the cat's name. I still love it dearly. My husband loves it dearly (and his grandmother was a Mazie, in the 1930s Great Depression chic kind of way), and he is hellbent on using it for Baby Girl Rocco. We've compromised the spelling to Maisy, but I'm so nervous to use it. Your outside opinions are much needed!

I think it is weird to name children after pets. I know that isn't really your intention, but how many people know you have a cat named Maisie. If I knew you had a cat named Maisie and a daughter named Maisy I would think you named her after the cat.

That cat won't live forever . I say choose it !

Also you can always start calling the cat something else if you want . It would be a shame not to use it because of the cat . Also , I do think you will wish you would have chosen it if you don't choose it , which I think you should

Maisie, Mazie, and Maisy all have really different illustrations to me. Maisie is outgoing and feisty, Mazie is edgy and glitzy, Maisy is kind of like Daisy... down to earth & patient. Would you consider Daisy?
Honestly, I would name a child after my cat (her name is Margot). And Teddy is one of my favorite boys names, despite it being the name of at least four friends' dogs. Unless your family is going to be weird about it, I would still use it if you love it and it means something to you. There are very few names I've liked since I was a teenager—I think that says something in itself. And Maisy is so dang cute!

I know a woman who literally named her daughter after her dog. It honestly does not seem that weird at all.

Maisie can be a nickname for Margaret and other similar-sounding names. If you give her one of the longer names, you can use Maisie as a nickname, but you can avoid the named-after-the-cat appearance. It has the added bonus that your daughter will have a choice of what she'd liked to be called when she's older, the short name or the longer one.

Can you imagine the jokes that would/could come from being named after your parents' dog or in this case cat if her classmates found out about it? That is what I meant about being weird. There is a lot of easy teasing potential there if someone wanted to use it.

If the cat is still around then definitely no. no matter the spelling, it could still be confusing because it sounds the same. if you really want to use it, i'd use it for her middle name.

Nikki—we were hysterical for a good 10 minutes over your comment. My husband said the exact same thing. It's true, though—she's an old cat. She is a great cat, albeit. Very affectionate, full of personality, very loved. Not altogether a bad namesake?
She also doesn't live with us—she lives a couple of states away with my mother. She's not really *my* cat anymore, and my husband has met her all of two times. I can't see anyone in our Maisy's life (outside of my immediate family, which is very small) knowing there was ever a Maisie-cat. If anyone will find it funny or odd, it'll be my mom, which will be a hurdle to overcome, but I'm just worried we won't love anything else.
My husband's Mazie raised him, and so his connection is ironclad and I'd feel terrible taking that away from him.
