Happy James vs. Happy Benjamin vs. Happy Quinn

There's a poster here who calls one of her sons Happy (I don't remember your name, sorry, but if you're reading this—how do other people react?), but I've been thinking about it for a bit now, and I wonder if it can work as a given name? I love it so, so much, and Iron Man loving Dad & oldest boy child are thrilled. We have two boys, Alexander Ryan (Aly) and Bowie Thomas, so our style has definitely shifted over the last 7 years, but I like the sound of Aly, Bowie & Happy.

If Joy, Joyce, Grace, etc. work as names, I think Happy does as well. Happy Hogan's first name is Harold, and so Happy is even a nickname for him, but if you never plan to call him anything else, I think Happy is fine! Love Happy James and Happy Quinn! Happy Benjamin is nice as well, but the B after the Ps sounds a little clumsy to me.

If you'd like some "intuitive" Happy full names, there's always Henry, Harry and Harper!

(I love Bowie Thomas too, so sweet!)

I don't think Happy can be a legitimate first name. The other poster's son had a full name, but they called him Happy. I don't think it will be taken seriously as a full name. I'm all for it being a nickname. I think any name can work as a full name, as Happy kind of just describes his personality, but H names might be the way to go.

Alexander (Aly), Bowie +

Hampton (Happy)
Asher—means happy one
Harper (Happy)
Isaac—means laughter
Felix—means happy, fortunate
Oron—means happy

Happy is not a credible name and I would fear the burden a name like that would place on a child. I would recommend it as a nickname to a name that he can properly grow up with. Such as Harper, Harold, Hampton like Anna suggests.

Comparing Happy to the names Joy and Grace doesn't make sense. Those names are not Joyful or Graceful, implying a constant emotional state like the word Happy does. Please just use it as a nickname! There are a lot of great given names that begin with H that could work well with the nickname Happy.

My oldest's full-time nickname is Happy, but he is a Jacob Jr. after his father and grandfather. We actually call him Happy because he was a really grumpy baby, but it stuck. We don't ever introduce him as Happy, and it's never assumed that we named him Happy, but it does suit him correctly rather than ironically now. I love that my Happy is Happy, but I would choose a name you love first, and let Happy as a nickname come organically.

This would be like naming your child marvelous or precious or pepper! Don't do it!

Happy is not a first name. It is an adjective. No one will take him seriously. You are making his life so much harder.

Happy is a unisex nickname-only - GL!

I know an old man named Hap Hartman. That is his really name. That is probably as far as I would take the name Happy. Only as a nick name with a legitimate first name.

I once met a Happy and I literally could not take him serious for the life of me, and believe me I tried so hard. This could also be a problem, and I know no one likes to talk about this, but your child could grow up to have depression and this could be something that your child would struggle with.

Like the question, "If my name is Happy than why am I not happy." Stuff like that.

You must be kidding! I thought this was a joke. Please just don't. Your poor son. I can see his future teachers faces now.
